I just don't get it...

Why do people post that they want to know the name of the cruise director and that it is important that the cruise director knows their names and makes them feel welcomed aboard? Same with the concierge? Am I missing something here????? I am on vacation and a smile and hello works for me... please explain....thanks!

Kelly, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't choose a ship because of the Cruise Director (CD) and have no interest in a suite and the folks that come with that or what entertainment is being featured. I guess there are those who do. I don't get it but to each... I hope you don't get flamed for your question.

Amen. Most people who've worked service industry jobs know that it's all about the tip, there and then. The swell guy you see, eighty percent of the time, isn't that into you and ain't really swell at all. I mean, if you like making friends, dynamite, but getting to know the schmucky CD just doesn't make mediocre shows any better or lessen any of the nickel & diming they have you on board for.

How rude! First, The CD is not tipped. Second, as someone else pointed out, the CD is responsible for trying to keep 2000 pax happy. The fact that the CD stopped to talk with us every time just added to that. No, there was no exchange of personal information but there was a concern that we enjoyed our cruise. And we did!

We have been very impressed with some cruise directors and very underwhelmed by others. It's not THAT big a deal, but it can make the difference in the entertainment. The cruise directors serve as masters of ceremonies (among other things) for the many shows on board. Their ability to captivate or amuse an audience can really set the mood for the whole show. A corny cruise director like we had on the Spirit last summer can almost pi$$ me off. The guy was good looking and slick and I'm sure he spent alot of time in the mirror, but it was obvious that he spent his life relying on his looks, and never even TRIED to polish his corny routine.

The Spirit's Hotel Director that summer was AMAZING. I always credit that position for the general service we receive on board. Prem and his staff were incredible and I made sure to tell him so. I would definately be motivated to select a ship based on prem's (he doesn't capitalize his name) directorship.

IMO the people who try too hard to best friends with the staff are the people who cannot depend upon themselves to create their own fun. You should not need a CD to tell you what to do and at what time to do it to have fun and enjoy yourselves. We see those types of people on every cruise we go on. The people in my traveling circle are not the type to adhere to a schedule someone else has chosen, hence "freestyle cruising." The only person I care about greeting me with a smile is my private butler To each their own I guess.

Last year I was on the Jade I never go to shows I am always in the casino however I met Gary at the meet and greet and saw him around the ship he always recalled my name and bought me a drink once when I saw him. On the day of disembarkation he was in the line of officers and said to me Maria it was a pleasure to meet you sorry I didn't see you at any of our events. It was very nice of him, they do work hard. The concierge on all the ships have been amazing to me checking up on me helping with getting on and off the ship(Ihave a disability) getting me into restaraunts just doing a great job of making me feel special I don't need to feel special but it's nice anyway. Once they came to my suite becasue they had not seen me my leg was not doing well, so I love the hard work they do to make me feel good. JMHO
