Kununoppin Posted July 2, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 2, 2011 We're looking at the available dates for one of the Antarctica cruises. The most discounted date is at the end of February. Are there any disadvantages for traveling to Antarctica this late in the season?
Rare jpalbny Posted July 2, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 2, 2011 We're looking at the available dates for one of the Antarctica cruises. The most discounted date is at the end of February. Are there any disadvantages for traveling to Antarctica this late in the season? Have heard that the ice is "dirtier" at that time of year which is a euphamism for "more penguin guano." No firsthand experience to back this up, as we went in December...
pke-atlanta Posted July 2, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 2, 2011 We've heard that time period referred to as the "dead penguin" tour. Penguins generally produce 2 chicks per season. The first is the one that gets all the food, and the second is the "spare" - in case the first one dies. By late February, the penguins are beginning to move on, and the dead ones are left behind. We were there in January, and the timing was perfect. Personally, I would not be interested in late February.
