From Washington, to Philly, to NYC, it's going to be real interesting with them shutting down the airports, buses, and subways. I was just watching the Weather Channel and CNN, and it looks like they are preparing for the subways to flood.

We are leaving for a cruise to Canada out of NYC tomorrow. Carnival has e-mailed us three times with updates. We flew in yesterday from Buffalo and are staying with our son. We were told to arrive at the pier between 9am and 1pm with an estimated sailing time of 3pm. They also switched the order of the two ports to avoid any problems. Our son does not live in an evacuation zone so he will be fine. I just hope that the airports are up and running normally by Thursday when we come back.

I hope you can get to the port as early as possible in case there are any last minute problems or delays. You never know with hurricanes, they can change direction in a nano second. We lived in Honolulu when Hurricane Iniki was poised to take a direct hit on downtown Honolulu but at the last minute it veered to the left, grazed the west coast of Oahu (minimal damage) and slammed straight into Kauai. We were hunkered down in the hallway of our highrise apartment expecting the worse - a very close call for Oahu while Kauai took a beating.

You just never know what will happen. Hurricanes are always unpredictable to say the least. Good luck and stay safe everyone!

NEW YORK - The nation's biggest subway system was ordered shut down as Hurricane Irene bore down Friday, potentially paralyzing movement for millions of carless people even as more than 300,000 were told to evacuate to safer places.

Also, the five main New York City-area airports will be closed to arriving passenger flights beginning at noon on Saturday because of Hurricane Irene, aviation officials said.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airports and area bridges and tunnels, said Friday that many weekend departures already had been canceled in anticipation of the hurricane.

The suspension affects John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports in New York City, Stewart International in the city's northern suburbs and Newark Liberty International and Teterboro in New Jersey. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark are among the busiest airports in the nation.

The suspension applies to domestic and international flights.

The unprecedented orders to close the subways from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, which affect New Yorkers from the Bronx's most distant reaches down through Manhattan and out to the beaches of Brooklyn and Queens, dealt the congested metropolis a formidable logistical challenge that raised more questions than it resolved:

Where are all of those people in New York's flood-prone areas supposed to go? And, more pointedly, how are they going to get there - especially since many don't even own a car.
