Civitavecchia Port?

We will have a rental car going to Civitavecchia to catch the ship. Does anyone know if you can reach the area to drop off luggage by car? We'd like to drive up and drop off the luggage then turn the car rental in and back to ship to check-in.

Our sad answer is no! They will generally not allow you to drive past the port gates (and you would probably get lost in the large port anyway) because of increased security. Assming that you are two...we do have a suggestion. Drive to the main port entrance (which is where you get the free shuttle buses to the ships) and drop your luggage with one of your party. Then the other person returns the car and returns to the port. Of course this means somebody is sitting at the port entrance for a while (not too bad if the weather is good). If your rental car is from Hertz it is only a short 2 block walk from the Hertz office to the port. But, if you are renting from other companies (such as Europcar) it can be quite a hike to the port which is complicated by the fact that there are not normally a lot of taxis sitting around Civitavecchia (outside the port). If you are lucky your rental car agent will get somebody to drive you over to the port entrance.

We had a car and stayed in Civitavecchia the night before the cruise. It was with Europcar and we returned the car in the morning and could walk back to the hotel. We got the hotel shuttle which took us right to the dock. Figured it was worth a few euros to have a smooth start.
