Air France Check In at LAX

I have read on here that ATN does not open its counters until a few hours before their LAX flights are scheduled to depart to PPT. We are flying AF to PPT--departure time is 11:55PM, but our east coast flight arrives at LAX at 2:30PM. Will we be able to check our bags with AF upon arrival at LAX with AF, or will we need to keep them with us until closer to departure time?

When we did this a couple of years ago, we checked our bags all the way through to Papeete from Atlanta. We never had to deal with them in LAX.
