Recent Niew Amsterdam passengers

We are going next week and wondering how the weather was and being it is our first Holland America how dressy do people get in the dining room on casual nights. Can you wear capris when you are in the islands if it is in the 80's? Or is it better to wear dress slacks nice top or skirts?

Trying to get the wardrobe ready.

Many thanks

We sailed in early December and the dress varied widely. On formal nights we had people in tuxes and sparkly full length gowns and others in jeans. All seemed to be seated in the MDR with no problems. On casual nights, capris fit in quite well. Polo shirts and slacks seemed quite popular with the men.

We steer a middle course and feel comfortable. No matter what you read here, you will find all kinds of travellers in varied garb. And the HAL staff tries to treat them all with respect.

We had rough seas a few nights and I was happy to have sandals to wear as needed.

We were also on N. Amsterdam in early December. We ate early, and frequently walked around the Lido deck after dinner. We were pleasantly surprised with the number of people following the dress code, and how few avoided the dress code by eating at the Lido. Out of 4 formal nights (B2B cruise), only one night had even half the Lido busy. The other three nights HAL could have shut down half the Lido (they did shut down some of the service areas), and the remaining side would not have been crowded.

We sailed Thanksgiving and the week after. Our two weeks aboard had four formal nights. The vast majority of guests made and an effort and while some gentlemen wore jacket and tie with dress pants or dockers, far more wore dark suits and/or tuxedos. I would say about 5 - 7% did not make any effort to honor dress code for the evening.

Many more women wore cocktails dresses and dinner suits than long gowns. Yes, there were some gowns but I would say maybe 20% with 80 % wearing shorter length and most looked very nice.

We encountered well mannered crowd for the most part and there weren't too many 'circus side shows'. :D

We had fabulous weather. Only day in 14 we saw any rain was for a bit on and off in Hondorous. It was warm and sunny and humidity was not extreme. Everyday was a beach day. :)

We had some high seas though sunny and bright our last day and had to miss HMC as did Noordam with which we were to share the island that day.
