Apart from previous week's work, it's also interesting to see what they are planning to do this week: (From Gantt chart)

 

  • Lifts on CC by helicopter (didn't happen last week AFAIK)
  • Remove all workshop etc (there must be loads of stuff they brought onto CC)
  • removal of light items by heli (from Friday 6 Sept onwards for 4 days)

and finally, the French revolution has arrived: :)

  • Install guillotine cutter on AB 12 (Does anybody know what such cutter is?)

 

It would be my guess that the guillotine cutter would be an emergency device to cut all connections to CC if the unthinkable happened and she rolled past the platform and sank.

Just had a quick look @ the webcams & saw a yellow/orange helicopter lifting a large bag/basket over the caissons towards CC's stern end. Unfortunately as soon as the webcam updated itself, the helicopter was nowhere to be seen! Presumably this is the start of the 'lifts/removal of light items by heli' stage?

 

Just my luck that my computer screen has packed in, & am now squinting @ the girlfriend's old laptop with a minute 10" screen. I'm rather selfishly pleased that the Parbuckle isn't now happening tomorrow, normal computer hopefully repaired for Parbuckle Day on the 20th!

I think you are about 9/10 hours behind Italian time therefore 11pm with you will be 7am in Italy. The cameras work 24/7 but dawn should be about 7am in Italy.

 

California is 9 hours behind Italy so 7 AM there would be 10 PM of the previous day in California. Daylight saving (or summer time in Europe) begin and end on different dates in the US and Europe so there may be brief periods where the time difference may be 8 o 10 hours but at this time both are on DST so they are on the correct 9 hour offset.

The whole article, translated, was posted here on Sat. The part asked about is as follows.

When will the parbuckling (technical term indicating the rotation in place of the Costa Concordia for returning to a more natural upright position)? The date is not yet official because before a meeting of all the institutions and bodies concerned in Rome will have to release their permissions. Although the project seems to be on the cards indicated the date of 13 September, talks with technicians and specialists would lean towards a slight slippage that bypassing the festivity of San Mamiliano, could the fateful day coincides with the September 20, maximum 25.

The helicopter is on the helipad on M30 at this moment

Morning Clive & B.E.,

 

Just been watching the helicopter in action again this morning, it appears to be transferring an 'L' shaped RSJ (reinforced steel joist) from presumably a barge/platform moored up behind Micoperi 30 to the stern end of CC behind the furthest caisson. Maybe this is one of the 'buckling prevention reinforcement stiffeners for decks 5,6,7', according to the latest Gantt chart.

 

Just been asking myself why they are using a helicopter when M30's 360degree crane is sitting there idle? It maybe that it's quicker & easier to negotiate the transfer of lighter materials using the helicopter, with the pilot getting a clear view of CC's side directly behind the caissons, which M30's crane operator cannot directly see?

 

I wish GiglioNews would speed up their camera streaming a little!

Good Morning everyone.

Sorry I don't know of any site showing the captured pictures, maybe some of our computer boffins can help.

The helicopter has certainly been busy today.

I notice Narvik is back again so that would suggest that the grout bag installation is still going on.

It will be strange when all the accommodation platforms etc move away. we haven't seen the ship for a year.

I agree it would be great if they could speed up the cameras, even real time if possible. But Giglio News have done a fantastic job in the work they have done to keep us informed.

Update from GiglioNews yesterday talks about the Parbuckle hopefully being able to commence from Monday 16th September onwards, depending on the weather & that all relevant authorities have granted permission for the go-ahead.

It seems to have a lot of video footage we don't think we have seen before. At the end of the video there another choice of more videos.

Didn't have time to explore it all yet but thought I should share it ASAP.

Just found this on the Giglio News site.

Thanks for your find Clive, haven't seen that footage before, some especially interesting sections in the hour long 3rd video.

 

Just had a look @ the webcams, the 'curtain' of strand-jack cables/wires hanging down from the caissons to the waterline appear to have been put under tension as they are now @ an angle & in line with the underwater platform attachment bars rather than hanging vertical under gravity (if that makes any sense?!).

 

Unfortunately the Hotel Saraceno webcam is frozen @ 8am local time this morning, not sure if others are finding the same problem?

 

The latest Gantt chart on the weekly report talks mainly about testing all the strand jacks etc, & removing all surplus materials/tools/equipment etc. from CC.

 

Not long now before the Parbuckle commences! Dare I ask what the general concensus is on this board as to whether the Parbuckle will be successful or not?

Glad you found that link interesting, certainly a lot to digest.

I have also noticed the frozen webcam, hopefully they will give it a kick in the morning to get it moving again.

I also noticed the towing vessel Aran this morning towing what looked like a flat platform, perhaps this is to take away materials surplus to requirements. Its going to look very strange when everything is moved away after we have been used to the site as it is.

My own feelings are that the parbuckle will succeed, there are bound to be hiccups, with possibly partial collapses of the starboard side, but I believe the Costa Concordia will be righted more or less intact. I honestly don't believe that Titan/Micoperi can afford to fail

Yes, the Hotel Saraceno cam is frozen. I think this did happen as well with the much less good cam they had there before.

 

I put this down to a weak broadband line of the hotel, the image must somehow travel from the cam to the Giglionews website where we see them. If the cam or the entire line of the hotel is down, it appears frozen. If anybody would have an email from that hotel, I could probably tell what router they have and how to fix it. That is seriously pushing it though......:D

(An all too common cause is anyway an outdated model, the recommendation is then to replace it. We should be grateful that they replaced the cam with a better model already.)

 

The M30 heli deck has lots of green lights on tonight.

 

Also, is it just me or have they moved the accommodation platform a little away from CC? There is a clearer view through to the anchor block towers, or is it not?

I thought that about the accommodation platform (Pioneer ?) but just thought it was my imagination. Do we expect it to be moved out of the immediate area before parbuckle?

Clive, I'd be suprised if they didn't relocate Pioneer during the Parbuckle, it's quite close to the anchor block towers, & with the tension on those strand jack cables/wires you wouldn't want to be near them if they snapped!.... I can't see any change in Pioneer's position @ present, will have another look in tomorrow's daylight.

 

Just had another look @ the Gantt chart, they are "plugging rat holes" tomorrow, interesting!?

Also, they talk about removing the ROC off CC & onto the Polluce support barge/vessel, but leaving the umbilicals attached on the day of the Parbuckle. Did anyone discover what the ROC actually is, could it be the cabin with 3 windows above the blister @ present?

I think the best guess was Remote Operating Centre. I am sure they do mean the 3 windows Portacabin and I guess the umbilicals would be for the sensors and cameras that will monitor whats happening on CC during parbuckle.

As for the ratholes the mind boggles, although it would seem to be a term in regular use within the salvage industry. Where are our experts when we need them.
