NCL and Limited Mobility ?s

My mom is coming with us on our future Canada/New England cruise. She does not currently own a wheel chair or scooter, but she typically gets one on vacations. She can only walk short distances, and standing for any period of time and going up stairs are extremely hard on her. Depending on the day, even stepping off a curb can be difficult.

  • Is there room for 2 scooters in the HC cabins if her friend also needs one? We are on the Dawn. She is in a handicapped balcony on deck 9 and we are next door in a regular balcony.
  • We will have 12 ports in 14 days, can you rent a scooter or wheelchair for the entire cruise or would it need to be done at each port?
  • How does NCL handle getting on and off the ship (both at the begging/end as well as the ports of call) when you have a scooter or wheel chair.
  • We are doing back to back cruises in Boston. Will it be easier if we have a car to drive to the port, or take a taxi from a hotel or does it matter? We haven't decided if we are flying or driving.
  • If we call our TA, will they be able to arrange help through NCL to get her through the cruise port experience and onto the ship?

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. The only cruise she did was on Princess and they had wheel chairs on board that they could use for the duration of the cruise, including the excursions. It made it really easy for them.

I did also post on the special needs area, but there didn't seem to be as many people reading the boards there.

Thanks.

Hi

DH uses a cane but have taken note in case his mobility deteriorates in future.

NCL has a special needs form on its website which asks what help is needed and whether you will be bringing your own wheelchair etc.By posting that back pre arranged help should be available at the port similar as to airport assistance.

The wheelchairs on board are only for use embarking and disembarking when a crew member will push you on or off the ramps.

Care Vacations seems to be the hire company recommended by the cruiselines. They arrange for the scooter, wheelchair etc to be in your stateroom on arrival and you leave it there at the end of the cruise.

you already have a handicap room booked so that solves the problem that some scooters cant get through the standard door but dont know how many you could fit in the room.

are any of your ports tender as you may not be able to get on and off the smaller boat?

hope this limited info is of use-suggest contact Care Vacations and NCL special needs dept anyway

enjoy your holiday

Lyn
