What is the difference...?

My TA told me she got me an upgrade from an 8A to an 8C or 8D or something like that. I figured a balcony room is a balcony room... which is what I wanted and what I paid for... What's the difference between the A's, C's, D's? Forgive me for asking a total newbie question, but this is my first cruise so I'm curious :)

some letters refer to the location on the ship, and others, balcony size.

it's antiquated thinking from the days when there was no air conditioning. the lower the deck, the hotter it was, and stale.

I'd take any balcony on a cruise to hell and probably love it. However, I've read on here that under the pool is not a great location as far as noise from chairs being dragged around.

Many times we prefer the lower deck cabins. The higher categories are just what the cruise line considers to be a better location. There are many cabins in high categories that people find undesirable for one reason or another--underneath the pool area, buffet, or gym being among the top reasons.
