Wheelchair Accessable Rooms

Yes I did, I think I almost have that memorized:eek: I go to the explore ships/Infinity for my information as I want ship specific.

The website states "10 accessible staterooms with automatic doors" but not which rooms

It says nothing about how to access the balcony, just because it states they are accessible, it doesn't tell me how.

The accessible stateroom guide shows (per deck and type) they are all the same size, but the deck plans show they are not.

We are looking at taking this cruise in 2013. Our cabin options are 6103 or 6109 for a balcony or 6012 or 6004 for a ocean view. Has any one been in any of these? Our daughter is a full time wheelchair user and since we will be flying on US carries we will be taking her power chair and manual chair.

Are there lips to the balcony or is there a ramp? Are the doors push button? Standard questions about bathrooms and maneuverability also please. Anything else that would help us make a decision regarding the rooms would be great.

Thank you,

Robyn

We did this cruise in '09. We had an HC OV cabin. I think it was 6005 or 6105. It was on the port side at the very front. The room was very large and had a couch that probably makes into a bed. The only negative was a slight ramp built in under the carpet to the bathroom. I don't use the scooter in the room all of the time and walking on the ramp with crutches felt a little odd, especially in rough weather.

One thing that I loved was approaching the locks. We woke up as we were getting to the first one (earlier than expected) and were able to see right into it from our large window.

Be aware that Celebrity can be a little more formal than some of the others. There were quite a few (but less than half) tuxes and gowns on formal nights.

mclinns04 - thank you so much but we bit the bullet and went for the aft wheelchair balcony. It was quite a bit more, but since we are a family of six (2 staterooms) felt that we needed to get a bigger balcony. This will be our first with Celebrity and we probably will not go with set dining rather choice and then eat in at the buffet on formal nights. However, in the future I would not have any problems booking those OV since I know more now.

My husband is confined to a wheelchair, and he uses only a manual wheelchair (no scooter or power chair -- and I am the pusher!). We've sailed on Freedom of the Seas twice in fully-accessible balcony rooms, and we were very happy with the accommodations, although the fold-down shower seat is a little small. In the shower he wears rubber sandals that fasten with velcro, so he has some safe footing to transfer to and from the wheelchair. I had no trouble getting him out to the balcony and back into the room again, but I did have to slide the door open manually. The only difficulty I've found is that Freedom is a huge ship, and lots of the floors are carpeted, so the pushing can be tiring sometimes.

We were most recently on Jewel of the Seas, and on that ship we did have some problems. For one thing, the stateroom attendant's cart is frequently left in the hallway, and it's impossible for my husband's wheelchair to pass by the cart. Sometimes the attendant was nearby and he'd move the cart, but sometimes he wasn't anywhere to be found. On those occasions, either I moved his cart myself, or a nearby helpful passenger did it for me. It wasn't really the cart itself that was the problem; it was the rack that holds clean drinking glasses that was on a shelf of the cart -- that rack was too wide for my husband's wheelchair to be able to pass by.

On Jewel, we also found it impossible for my husband's chair to pass through the casino -- the stools in front of the slot machines stick out into the aisle too far -- and the aisle in the shopping area is also too narrow when there are more than a few shoppers looking at the display cases. Problem is, going through either the casino or the shopping area was the only way to go from one end of the ship to the other on those decks, without going outside. So we ended up going outside every time we wanted to go from the dining room to the theater. Not that much fun when it's raining, or windy.

We didn't encounter those problems on Freedom -- so we're sailing again on Freedom in October!

]In December, on the Jewel of the Seas, we experienced the problem in the halls on deck 8 with the carts being left out. My mother-in-law and my sister-in-law were using wheel chairs so we had a parade going to the dining room and shows, etc. We would go up to deck 10 and seemed to have less trouble going to the other end of the ship. I don't know what the inside of the accessible cabins look like on the Jewel but having the automatic door opener on the outside would seem to give more freedom to the guests. My mother has a scooter but she hasn't been with us on the Jewel yet. I'm sure that will be a whole other set of challenges. Good LUCK and happy cruising!

DH is a manual wheelchair user, although he can do a short distance walking as long as he can hold on to you for balance. We are considering room 6315 (deck 6 HC with view of Promanade) which overlooks the promanade so he can sit up there and people watch and see the parade. Because he sleeps some during the day, I'm wondering about noise. Does anyone know? The RCI reps say they aren't noisy, but I'm not sure if they really know. Our other choice would bne room 1657 on deck 10 which is an interior HC. Thinking it might be centralized more. Opinions?

I personally have not stayed in one of these cabins but has asked that question and everyone I asked said they didn't hear noise below. Most however don't sleep during the day but I would think the most noise you would hear would be from the parade and it sounds like that is something you would want to watch that anyway. Hope you have a great cruise.
