Do I need to carry cash with me onboard?

Hi Just wanted to verify about the 3% fee? Last time I went on the GEM i don't think that fee existed? Is this a "new fee" in the last few years?

 

It is relatively new. Too many CC members just taking cash and not gambling just for points on their credit cards. Made no sense for NCL/Casinos at Sea to eat the credit card fees.

Don't be a piker. Carry lots of cash and tip everyone you come in contact with. These people work long and hard to make your vacation a wonderful experience. When in doubt, tip.

 

I can see it now when Fine walks down the stairway and they make it "rain" :rolleyes:. That way everyone gets first grab at your cash.

 

Hopefully this was tongue and cheek.

Cash is not really needed....except....

We always carry two dollar bills (not 2 one dollar bills, but 2 dollar bills)...we tip occassionally (uh...often, really) for our drinks, our steward daily, and any other crew member that we feel deserves it. That two dollar bill will be remembered, and I've never gone thirsty by the pool!

Maybe you put cash down on your onboard account at the beginning of your trip? That's what I did on my last cruise...I brought a set amount, paid it to my onboard account when I boarded, and did not go over. (It was not NCL, though.) Had a little extra on the last night and had fun at the duty-free shop!

We brought $50 in $1's to use for tipping along with $100 in $5's and $100 in $10's to use for taxis, etc while on shore. I always feel crummy when I haggle with someone over a string bracelet, get it for $5 and whip out a $20!

 

We left cash here and there as tips in the specialty restaurants and no one complained. We also brought little chocolate bars with a printed sticker that said "thanks for making our trip special" and gave those out along with $1 bills to room service, etc.

 

Other than that the casino is the only place aboard that will take cash money!

It would be a nice perk to remove that for people that spend a lot of time in the casino. Of course, its better to do what I've done my last few cruises, and win enough to keep the safe stocked.

 

I would rather not bring much cash with me for the trip to the ship.

You need dollar bills to give to the dock worker handling your luggage on embarkation and also for waiters or waitresses who serve you drinks or on room service. You can put the tip on your ship board bill, but the NCL staffers love cash. Also cash is needed for your room steward at the end of your trip for exceptional service. Cash comes in handy when you dock in various ports.

 

You mean the dock worker who unloads the bus luggage less than gently then stands there with his hand out? Those guys always make me grumble... You cant NOT pay them. :rolleyes:

I never tip those guys and I'm a pretty decent tipper. I don't like the feeling that I'm being shaken down for cash.

Keep in mind that there's a 15% tip added to drink charges so there's no need to tip above that unless you want to.

We carry some cash mostly for tips and other small things. I usually use cash in port but this last cruise used my credit card in Cozumel and got home to find out my number had been stolen. Not positive it was because of that but it could have been. If I have lots of cash left and am flying home the day we disembark I just put the extra cash on my account to offset the credit card bill.

As PP's have said cash is for the casino if you gamble. I also tip my room stewards and porters in cash. Have a great cruise and welcome to NCL!
