snorkling in Comumel

We are looking for a good place to snorkel without being on a tour in Cozumel and if you have any comments for shopping and lunch a bonus for the ladies on the trip. We spent much time there many years ago but never got past the dive boats and the old Carlos and Charlies.

We did a snorkeling excursion with the cruise line the first time we sailed to Cozumel, and it was very crowded and rushed. The last time we were there, we took a taxi to Chankanaab Park and went to the beach. There's snorkeling equipment available to rent (LOTS cheaper than on the ship!), and the snorkeling there is wonderful! We took the advice of one of our waiters and took a snack pack of cereal from the breakfast buffet with us. We sprinkled some into the water, and we were surrounded immediately by the most beautiful fish! They gobbled up the cereal, and when it was all gone, one of the fish took a nibble at my husband's shoulder! He's a real trooper, though, and after grabbing his shoulder and looking it over, we laughed and figured that this was one fish story that would be hard to top! Be sure to bring an underwater camera with you. We had a disposable one, and we were really glad we did. The photos were amazing.

(Please don't slam me because of the cereal! We disposed of the trash in one of the trash recepticles on the beach, and the fish were none the worse for their little "snack.")

This past winter we went to Cancun at an "all inclusice" and took a side trip to Xel-Ha. It was WONDERFUL. Great snorkeling and the lazy river was both a blast and very relaxing. If you have access to this "water park" I highly suggest it.
