Veendam to Bermuda

I mentioned the casino thing to a tour guide who called last night. He was vehemently against it...said if they have casinos, they should be in the hotels so the money stays in Bermuda. Seems short-sighted to me...I would think they'd rather have the business the cruises bring in.

So, that must be where the opposition is coming from: All the locals.

Well the locals are the ones that have the final say in the matter and right now the majority don't want them... for a number of reasons.

Why no one can explain to me how being in port for three full nights and NOT burning hundreds of tons of fuel oil in moving the ship from port to port costs MORE than what a few passengers drop in the ship's casino durning those same evenings is beyond me.

I think most passengers will have some kind of budget for what they want to spend in the casino during a cruise. They wwill spend thaat amount if the ship spends three days aand nights in port or seven days and nights at sea. Having the casinos closed in the eveenings on three nights a week does not make any difference.

Passengers are NOT spending thousands of dollars in the casino or anywhere else on the ship. The majority pay less than $800 for a seven day cruise, even less in the bars and shops. All the gambling, nights at sea etc that are used to help generate revenue are not working because on board prices are not competitive.... too high. Lower the bar prices and the cost of goods on board... that is what will generate more revenue.

I just came back from a cruise in the SAGA PEARL. First night on board they produced a new wine list that offered guests a beautiful selection of great wines at 50% discount and no added grats. As soon as I saw the list I ordered nine bottles of Meursault 'Vielles Vignes" 2006 at $75 per bottle and 5 bottles of Chateaux Kirwan Margaux 2004 at $69.... then 50% off the total. And if you decided not to take aadvantage of the discount you could have complementary wwines in the dining room and comp standard drinks in the bars! And there are no casinos on board either!

Where would you suggest eating...not necessarly the ones listed in all the tour guides ...there must be others. Or perhaps some that the locals really like...any thoughts?

Thank you, Stephen! We'll check it out.

Is the restaurant at the Fourways Inn still good?

Honestly, Bermuda doesn't offer much in the way of night life or "gourmet out of this world food" restaurants.

We are forever in love with Bermuda, but I couldn't agree more about the food. Have not found a WOW meal yet.
