Celebrity Summit: Be careful of onboard shopping policy

Was on Summit 4/14 & made a few purchases onboard. One of the items proved defective & when I tried to return it for credit ($10) I was told I couldn't get shipboard credit & had to choose another item instead. There was really nothing else I wanted but since I had no choice I settled on a CD for $20. So instead of being able to get $10 credit I had to spend an extra $10 (in addition to purchases made previously). I can understand their "exchanges only" policy if nothing is wrong with merchandise but this was defective. (It was a water wallet with a ziplock inside & the first time I tried to use it the ziplock broke right off). I complained to Guest Services about this policy but they did nothing for me. Just wanted to make people aware they won't get refunded or credited if something is wrong with an item they purchase.

I believe that the concessionaire on Celebrity is the same one that operates the shops on Royal Caribbean and therefore I understand and share your displeasure with their policies. I had a similar problem with an item bought on RCI and it took the intervention of someone in the Adam Goldstein's office to get my purchase price refunded. I would have been pleased had they simply replaced the defective item but apparently that was contrary to their policies. I returned the defective item and still, several months after I had received my refund, they shipped the item back to me in the same unusable condition as it was when I originally returned it to them. Needless to say I will not be purchasing anything while this concessionaire is operating the shops on their ships.

So they gave you a refund, AND returned the defective item to you?

Purchasing items on the ship, and to some extent, in most ports is pretty much the same as playing the slots in the casino. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

I think the policy of not replacing a defective item while you are still on the ship sucks. But, it is what it is.

Sorry.
