Just back from the June 23 sailing - fun family cruise of Hawaii

I was on this cruise as well. An excellent vacation other than the 22+ hours in an airplane.

We didn't go to the meet and greet, mostly a shy family we are. I'm glad soxfan saved the dailies for you all. My wife tosses them out as soon as the next one arrives.

(I guess soxfans are good for something... I kid)

We stayed at the Waikiki Marriott on the nights of the 21st/22nd. Loved Waikiki. Walked everywhere (I must have walked 20 miles those days).

The ship is great (missed the Casino, but that probably saved me a bunch of dough).

We ate at:

Jefferson Bistro - good food, great service.

Little Italy - save your money.

Luau - a must (food was ok, show was terrific)

Lazy J - great food, great service - worth the price, best meal of the week.

The other nights we ate at the Skyline or Liberty - food was fair, service was spotty.

We made reservations each night which really helped. The people waiting in the lobbies looked miserable.

I thought the buffet for Breakfast and Lunch were great every time. Good variety.

Ask me about my omelet experience if you wish to know...

NYY - I agree with your comments about the cruise. Definitely need a reservation for main dining room. Even with free champagne, it was not ideal to be waiting for dinner.

About baseball, wait until next year. :)

I wasn't aware you could make reservations for the MDR :o I think on our last cruise they only allowed reservations for large groups. How far ahead can you make them? same day? 24 hours? Or is that only available for suite guests?

Actually, I don't know that you can make reservations for the MDR and may have been mistaken when I suggested that you should make them. We did not make any such reservations. The one time we ate at the MDR we waited for about 20 minutes. Then, after that, we decided to go to either the buffet or specialty restaurants. Maybe someone else knows if reservations are possible for the MDR.

Thanks for the clarification. :)

When we were on the Gem on a med cruise we mostly went to the MDR when it opened at 6:30 (half hour after the other MDR opened). We never had a problem getting a table and didn't have to line up. Of course it may be different in Hawaii, I guess we will just have to wait and see. :D

Loved your review and I keep checking my mailbox for the sample of recent Dailies! Mcap1250@gmail.com Just checking in to see if I may have missed them! Do you recall what was the general lunch time? Wondering because our first day exccursion ends @ 12:15, and by the time we get back to the ship..1ondering if lunch would be over? Would you recommend reserving Lazy j. For the first night? I keep reading that they serve lobster the first night, so would it be better to use the MDR?

Since this is such a port intensive itinerary, we did not really eat lunch on the ship, except for the first day and the last day in Kauai, when we had lunch in the Aloha Cafe buffet after boarding/returning to the ship. According to the dailies, there are all kinds of options for lunch if you are on the ship. Generally, you can have lunch in the Aloha Cafe from 12-3, or in the Cadillac Diner from 11-5. In addition, the Key West Bar and Grill was open from 1-6. On embarkation day, lunch at the Skyline and East Meets West Noodle and Sushi Bar was available from 12-2. I think pizza delivery and room service were always available, although we did not use them. I think if you have an excursion that ends at 12:15 that the easiest thing to do after would be to go to the buffet lunch in the Aloha Cafe.

Yes, I think lobster was available in the MDR on the first night. So maybe if you want to have lobster you go to the Lazy J on the second night. I did not have any experience with the Lazy J, but the restaurant that seemed to fill up most quickly (based on the red lights on the status boards) was Teppanyaki.

Will send the dailies out this evening. Have a great cruise!

Thanks for the dailies, and the tips, soxfan! They will be put to good use!
