wooden horses

 We recently sailed on Star Princess where they "sell" the wooden horses on the first day at sea to the highest bidder, usually around $100. Then the "owners" name the horse & decorate it for the big race on the last day. The winner gets to keep all the money from the sale.

Do they do this on Carnival Glory? We are doing a family cruise & I thought it might be fun to take some decorations along if they do.

they had the horse racing on the valor in feb, but, i'm not sure they sold the horses, like they did on the princess cruiseline.

valor also did valor idol instead of the usual cruiser talent show. it was karoke singers, very good talent in ours!!

They did it on the ELATION about 3 years ago and the lady that bought the #5 horse was "accidentally" (I still think she was murdered) killed on the ship !

Wow ~ Stay away from #5 horses! What was the "official" reason she died? That's interesting.

"Officially" the FBI, who came onboard in Puerto Vallarta, ruled the death an accident. She "fell" over the railing 2 decks from the Sports Deck to the Lido deck on the forward part of the ship. Her purse, which was empty except for her Sail'n'Sign card, was found on one part of the Sports deck and her earrings were found on another part of the Sports deck. The only reasonable explanation for an accidental death would be her attempting the "King of the World" thing. I relayed the story on another cruising website when I got back and was flamed beyond my wildest nightmares (the website has already "poofed" the 146 post thread with a simple explanation from Carnival when posters search for it).

The good part about that argumentative thread is, I learned of Cruise Critic. :)

We were on the Valor in Feb and we went to the first horse race listed in the capers and after the race they do auction off the horses we were able to get the number 3 horse for an initial investment of $35.00. Then during the week thwey had seveeral warmup races and on the last sea day, they had the owners race. Our horse wion and we ended up making a bout $170.00 all together not bad for the investment, word to the wise carrying the horse around and promoting it can be a real pain by the end of the week, probably will never buy one again but it was fun dressing him up, we picked up something in each port for him. If you plan on going to the auction and try to get a horse remember the first couple and last couple of horses seem to sell for the most money as people want to make sure they get one, both the middle two seemed to go for around price 30 or 35 dollars, i think the last horse went for the most closer to your $100 idea. Good luck and have fun, even if you don't get a horse you can still attempt to make some money by betting so go to the races.

RCCL does this but NCL doesn't. Hope they do have the horse races on the Glory. They are so much fun! I really like seeing how the horses are decorated for the big race!

According to the RCCL board, RCCL is no longer doing this. I know they no longer had it on Voyager in January.

Thanks for that, Gary. Sucks to be flamed. But on a CRUISE message board, of all things! LOL That's when you know you gotta go! :D Interesting story. I think your theory makes a lot of sense.

We were the proud owner of a horse on the Legend this last March. They ran a race earlier in the week and afterwards they auctioned them off for a final race at the end of the cruise. All money from the auction became a pool for the owners, split between the winner and the one who got the most bets on race day. Ownership averaged about $50 dollars a horse.

Had a great time running around the ship with our party animal "Sea Muffin". She was dancing with the waiters, losing money in the casino and having a great time. I'm still looking into some mysterious bar and spa charges on my S&S card that appeared during that period.

It was a blast even though she came in out of the money. Suggest you bring the decorations along just in case. I mean you can always toss out some of your husbands clothes to make room.

This thread is from the Princess board.

As it goes on it really livens up.

There is a post saying one of the horses broke and they threatened to take it to the glue factory.

Got it! Thanks Derf. I was beginning to think that this was a running joke played on virgin cruisers such as myself  hmmm now there's an idea for a thread, as long as I am in on it!

The horses on Princess were about 30 inches high & they "run" according to the roll of the dice. One die is white this tells the horses number, the other is black & says how many spaces it "runs".

On our cruise the horses sold for about $100 @ with the total purse going to the owners in the final race. A young girl about 12 won the race with a horse her uncle bought her (he had to collect her $670 winnings because she was under 18) but she was thrilled. It was alot of fun to watch & if they have it on the Glory we will certainly buy one. Just not #5 LOL.

Please help me out here. I got the buy the horse and decorate it part, but how are the races run, and what are the sizes of these fine wooden beasts (except any #5 horse...)?

In any case, it sounds like fun... but I feel a bit dense for asking this question:o

Not sure how its done today, but on the ELATION almost 3 years ago, you don't actually get to keep the horse, you only "buy" it for the cruise in an auction. Also, you don't get to keep the amounts bet on the horse, but win a prize if your horse gets the most bets placed on it. Also a prize for the best dressed horse.

The race is very simple:

A pad is laid down on the deck numbering from 0 to (say) 20.

Double dice are rolled. There are 6 horses. Your horse moves up on space every time your number on the die comes up (maybe even more if "doubles" are rolled). First horse to the end of the mat/pad wins the race. Simple straight odds chance of winning.

I'm sorry, please forgive me, but to me it provides entertainment for the most easily amused passengers only. :D I think the person that wins the auction on a particular horse has a built in "ice breaker" for the rest of the week. It offers someone an opportunity to approach total strangers and ask them to "bet on my horse" on Saturday. This, incidentally, is IMHO why the lovely lady that bought the #5 horse in the above post of mine, got so involved in meeting everyone on the ship and pleading with them to bet on her horse. She was a doll too, cute petite (the railing on the Sports deck would have come up to her chin ! ) single Mother of 2 young sons, late 20s, on her first cruise with her friends. An absolute tragedy. I think about her almost every day. :(
