Never heard of it.. Myself I prefer the generic form of Bonine, Meclizine HCL. You can buy these at your favorite drug store, Costco, Walmart, Target, etc for way less than Bonine. Cheapest I have seen it for is $4.99 for 100 pills at Costco. Bonine runs around $5.99 for 8 pills.

We had a problem with Bonnie in that it made us so sleepy even the non drowsy. I ask tonight at Walmart about Ginger, the Pharm. said that he had never heard of it for motion sickness, but it was printed right on the ginger root bottle and I have read on here several times that people have had very good luck with it.

My sister was told by her doctor to begin taking the Bonine a couple of days before traveling and to take one daily at bedtime so that the drowsyness does not affect you. Don't know if this works but it might be worth the try.

If it works for 24 hrs, why can't you take it before you go to bed? That way you WANT to be drowsy!! We are in ports all day and sail at night. Wouldn't this work? It seems all reccomendations have been to take it in the AM. Why??

I've had motion sickness all my life, and have used the patch, but it just made me hallucinate. I now take non-drowsy Bonine the morning I'll be boarding the ship, and every morning of the cruise. No problems whatsoever.

However, if the Bonine makes you drowsy, take it at night instead of morning.:) Really doesn't matter what time of the day you take it, just as long as it's 24 hours between pills. (There's a chewable Bonine now, as well.)

I am very susceptible to motion sickness, so was worried about becoming seasick on our cruise in April.

Based on recommendations I read here on the boards, I bought Bonine - the 24-hour non-drowsy formula.

I took a Bonine tablet every night before going to sleep, and it worked just great.

We had eight- to twelve-foot waves most of the sea days, as well as larger waves one of the last days ...absolutely not a smidge of seasickness on the ship or on the tenders.

I get motion sickness (I get sick in cars, planes, everywhere), so I've tried many things, and Bonine is my favorite. It doesnt make me drowsy, but like someone previously suggested, you can take it at night right before you go to bed, just in case.

I have two children 13 & 8....It says on the directions for people 12 yrs and older....What would you recommend for my 8 yrd old?......AND the bonnie question is ....being on the cruise ship and having a couple of drinks...one at dinner , one during the entertainment show, and possibly one at the casino or at the disco later that evening...how is that going to effect taking Bonnie right before bed?

I think these questions would be best directed to your family physician...He or she knows your children's medical history and could give you professional advice. The same goes for the alchol consumption. You could even check with your local pharmacist...ours is wonderful when it comes to questions about medications!

I get severe motion sickness even if I'm a passenger in a car. I recommend experimenting with the various methods on dry land long before you ever cruise. I'm glad I did. I took the Bonine and woke up two days later. It REALLY knocked me out. Even the non-drowsey. I think it's in the antihistamine family. No wonder. I can never take them because there is something about my system where they just knock me out. Dramamine did the same thing. I got the patch from my doctor. The worst thing it did for me is dilated my eyes so everything looks a little strange. I can live with that. I also bought a large bottle of ginger pills, plus a package of crystalized ginger to chew/suck on.

My wife suffers from severe motion sickness. She's tried everything but the only thing that works for her is Mezclazine and the only place she can get it is from the Purser office on the cruise ship.

I was planning on taking some Bonine just in case, Should we take it before or can you wait if you feel sick??

I have been deep sea fishing and do not seem to have a problem.

Also has anyone drank with Bonine it says no Drinking??

Thanks

I am a Bonine girl and take it at night. I agree I nap more but it's a vacaction so I can live with that. I do take it before I get onboard and I also have some alcohol (I am not a roaring drunk on vacation, some are. If you are one of those, no judgements we all have stress. You might want to drink less with it) without ill effects.

I too have heard good things about Ginger and since it is a natural supplement there are not side effects. Both Me and #2 son suffer from motion sickness. I have heard it is not a huge issue on the ship unless the weather is bad but better to have it than wish I did.

I think I will go with that or the patches you put behind your ear (DH is a fisherman and lots of friends swear by those)

Good luck

Melissa

  • 2 weeks later...

I just got a prescription for the patch from my doctor and she told me not to put it behind my ears because it really made her eyes dialate. She suggested that I put on my torso and this will avoid the wide eye affect. I haven't tried it yet, but we will see what happens.

Strong suggestion: If you dont know that you need it, don't take it even as a preventative. Over time you WILL get used to the sea motion and all will be fine unless you have some other issue, and if so I suggest talking to your doctor and not other people on a forum.

I personally have no issues with sea sickness other than the "drunk" stumble you get when going from a rocking boat to dry land. One of my trips to sea found me in fairly rough waters, and of course most people were sick. I felt fine but unfortunately with enough peer pressure I took some medication.

I can't tell you how sick I was to my stomach. My head hurt and I felt, well seasick, but not just seasick. For a few hours I sat in a hamock and closed my eyes, sweating, swearing and coming close to barfing. Then in the blink of an eye the medation went through me 6 hours later I was back to being FINE, even though the boat was rocking more than before and everyone else still looked quite green.

As for burning, I was really pale at the time. It didnt change my TTB (time to burn) one bit. Of course I burnt in about 4.5 msec so maybe my watch wasn't quite timed acurately enough to measure any changes due to the meds.

:)
