Ahem. The OP is actually from the UK, not the USA..... her definition of 'real bread' (and 'real anything else') may well be different from an american's definition!

 

Back to the OP: do you like tapas in Spain? If so, you might enjoy enjoy trying cicchetti in bars, etc, in Venice. Try some of those, and some self-made sandwiches, and you'll be fine.

 

(Also most places selling cicchetti are likely to be selling good wine as well, so you'll definitely be doing OK.)

I may or may not have eaten an entire dinner's worth of cicchetti and wine in Venice - maybe even more than once! :p You can get some extremely nice Barolo in most cicchetti bars.
