All I can say to you Fine and Jim Dandy is you must be suffering from little syndrome....How nice it must be to sit behind your computer and judge others on how they PREFER to do things. It is people like you (unhelpful, but feel the need to bash) that give CCers a bad name........

You walked off an NCL ship with your refund? When was this? In October 2011, they sure weren't giving cash refunds. I argued for about 30 minutes to no avail, the rep and the supervisor both told me it was NCL polisy to mail refunds in the form of a check to the address of record.

We were refunded on two ships, September 11, 2011 on the Gem, and the May 20th sailing on the Star. Both amounts were under $200 and they did keep a CC on file.

We purchase everything before we cruise. We purchase our DSC, drop $$$ onto our sign and sail, purchase shore excursions and purchase our casino vouchers as well. We carry cash on us as well for Island purchases. We have never had any problems. That is how we prefer to budget. I might also add that I am frugal but by no means do I need to be, I can afford to cruise, just my preferred method of planning. :p

:D Me too! All of it! We also get a bar set up as well as order several bottles of Moet to our suite. Having it all paid for, along with the CC I charged it on paid just gives me a piece of mind and I am relaxed. That is the way I sail!

Just want to put it out there for anyone that is not aware......you don't have to read posts like this one if you don't want to - you can "IGNORE" certain posters if you choose and not have to read their posts at all (unless someone quotes them) You can find the setting in your User CP under "Ignore Lists".

I am not trying to offend anyone with my questions above. I was just trying to understand. If I offended anyone, I am sorry.:o

Peg, I am sure that you did not offend anyone! I respect you, and I am grateful for your help with questions in the past.

...I wouldn't do it for budgeting per say, but because I think I tend to nickel and dime myself. If I've prepaid then I would do things I wanted to do rather than say, "oh, I really don't need that" a possibly miss out on something I would have enjoyed...

That comes closest to the reason why I plan to pay ahead on OBC. My DW is a tightwad and won't spend extra for anything No thermal spa, no specialty restaurants, no adult beverages.

However, we normally sail on Oceania and have sailed a couple of times on Regent. Regent is "all-inclusive", so it doesn't bother her to order drinks, etc. Oceania is not completely all-inclusive, but things like sodas, bottled water, specialty restaurants, etc. are included. The thing is, they are considerably more expensive than NCL. Remember, nothing is free -- if it's included, you just pay more up front.

So, that's my key for getting more enjoyment from an NCL cruise -- figure what I intend to spend, and pre-pay it, so it shows up as on-board credit. Psychologically, my DW will consider the money as already spent and will use it. My plan is to turn our cruise into an "all-inclusive" cruise just like Regent. The beauty part is that even making it all inclusive, NCL still works out to be about half the cost of Regent and about 60% of Oceania.

We still plan to sail Oceania and Regent every chance we get (Oceania has the reputation of the best food at sea), but for our bucket-list 24 day cruise on Star in Norway and Iceland next year, we decided to save a few bucks. We sailed NCL once before, in New England and Canada on Jewel, and enjoyed it for what it is. But, we'll only sail NCL when school is in session, because we're old fogeys who don't want a ship full of kids unless we're sailing with the grandkids. I think there were only 14 kids on board Jewel on the Canada cruise, and we don't expect many in Copenhagen in September.

I too per pay OBC and also my restaurants. If you have to cancel you will get a refund quickly,as I had to do this in May. I also budget, not because I need to, it keeps me from spending foolishly. It is easy to get carried away with spending while on vacation.

Tell me about it!!! We did a "girls" cruise when I was in my 20's and I am one that rarely drinks alcohol. Wellllllll............my bar tab alone was $500.00!!! I couldn't believe it when I got my statement!!!

People can be very preachy on this site...

I have bought onboard credit and paid my service charges early to avoid the hassle of carrying thousands of dollars of cash on board during embarkation. Not only is this annoying, but would be quite unsafe.

I try to steer clear of any and all banks when possible, and pre-purchasing onboard credit through a money order or cashiers cheque is the way to go for me! (My credit union has mandatory maximum daily spending limits, and does not work for NCL's hold on "debit cards")
