My 2 cents, we did a repositioning cruise on celebrity this past April (I think the reverse is in October). Started in San Juan and ended in Bayonne.

 

We hit St. Thomas, St. Martin, Tortola and Bermuda. Similar situation to you I wanted to do the carribean my husband wanted to go back to Bermuda.

Try Jamaica to please your son. New Orleans isn't that far from Alabama and there are several Jamaican Itineraries leaving from there.
