Aft Penthouse to OS with 2 balconies

(we haven't sailed on the Dawn, but rather on her sister ship, the Star)

Personally, even though it lacks some of the perks of the Owner's suite, we wouldn't trade our Penthouse for anything...okay, maybe for the Garden Villa, but that's just not happening. Why do we love the Aft Penthouse?

:) The mesmerizing sounds of the ship's wake

:) A great view of the sealife which often follows the ship

:) No direct breeze during sailing (we generally cruise Alaska)

:) The aft suites are generally a bit of a walk from most everything so we burn some of those excess calories

:) On deck 8 you're treated to the exquisite aroma of baked goods wafting up from below

Norwegian Dawn would you upgrade from aft penthouse to owner's suite with 2 balconies? * We would be paying the full price for the upgrade (not an upsell). It's our first NCL cruise.*

We got the call from the upsell fairy when we were on the Dawn 2 Christmas ago. We would never have paid full price and be comfortable with doing so but for the upsell it was worth it. If you can afford it I say go for it - it's an awesome suite! Unfortunately our cruise was ruined but had nothing to do with the suite. DH got really sick from a bacterial infection from a recent surgery.

Anyway it is a huge suite and loved all the extra room. I loved that it had two balconies as when the forward got too breezy or hot from the sun you could go to the side one.:D The only thing is the front of the ship does get a lot more movement. On a night of rough seas was the only time I ever got seasick.

If you decide not to upgrade you will have a wonderful time with your aft suite! We love the aft and watching/listening to the wake.:D

There's almost no comparison between the space and luxury of the owners suite and a penthouse. We sail in forward penthouses all the time, but the one time we upgraded to the 2 balcony owners suite on the Dawn, we were totally amazed, and completely spoiled.

The OS has a full living room, a dining table that seats 6, a bedroom that can be closed off from the rest of the suite, a half bath off the living room, and a large, luxurious bathroom and dressing area. The two balconies are fantastic...if the forward one is too windy, the side one is fine. We've never been bothered by the motion at the front of the ship, in any kind of cabin.

All that being said, I think it's really a matter of how you like to cruise. If you are out and about on the ship all the time when it's sailing, and if you're off the ship all the time in port, then you'd have to consider whether the extra money for the OS was worth it. But if you spent a lot of time in your cabin when cruising, you'll love the OS and the money will be well spent.

Oh my gosh,

Thanks for all the input! We are more likely to be either in the room or the casino:rolleyes: I think that's why my husband was thinking of the upgrade...what worries me a bit are the things I'm reading about keeping your drapes drawn at night:confused:

VideoTech,

You play don't you? What are your thughts on NCL's players club?

TIA

Our first cruise was a B2B2B and the last leg we caught an upsell to the OS on the Pearl (very much like the Dawn). It ruined us for almost any other cabin. We love the space, the bathroom, the two balconies. We spend a lot of time in the cabin, and the OS is so comfortable.

In the evening the steward will turn down your cabin and close the front curtains. If you want the curtains open, but I'm not sure why you would want them open, you can turn off the lights in the bedroom and keep the curtains open.

The players club is good. Get a card first thing. You will accrue points while playing. I think when you hit 1500 pts you get a free drink card. At the end of the cruise you can exchange points for money off your bill. I dont remember the exchange rate-anyone else remember? If your gamble a lot you may get offered a free room the next time you cruise if you book thruough the Casino at Sea program.

We've never had an issue with the cabin lights at night on any NCL forward penthouse that we've ever been in, or in the one forward OS.

You must keep the curtains on the forward facing windows drawn at night if you have the lights on in the room. You must also keep the inner, regular door closed, but you'd want to do that anyway.

You can still slip out the door and onto the forward balcony at night...just don't leave the door open with the lights on.

There's no restrictions on the side windows or door at night in the two balcony OS.

We're quite happy with the NCL CAS system. We've been treated very well by them in terms of basic cabin comps for all our cruises. On board, we typically gamble enough to earn a comp'd dinner or two, and a comp'd spa treatment for DW. At the end of every cruise, we feel we've been treated very well in terms of credit against our on board charges.

It helps that both of us are slot players, so we get accurate credit for our play. As a video poker player, I wish NCL would give full credit for vp play, but you can't find any casino, land or sea, that does this. It's a pet peeve of mine...don't get me started.:(

But overall, we feel CAS provides good value for the money.

Have sailed in both and the OS is pretty "sweet" even though we love the Aft . We made use of both front and side balconies quite a bit. They are 2 completely different suites . Go for it . ;)

P.S. No trouble with lights ..watched the stars every night..
