passport etc in room safe?

In 36 cruises, I've never had anything like a passport, airline tickets or jewelry taken from the room safe. With crime a big concern on some of the islands, I wouldn't take the chance of carrying airline tickets or all the jewelry on my person while on tour.

We leave all passports, travelers checks, extra credit cards, extra money, jewelry, keys, etc., in the safe.

We take a shore only what we need - some money, a charge card, and driver's license for identification. We never take a passport ashore unless it is needed for a particular foreign tour. Driver's licenses are easier to replace than a passport if something should happen.

We have taken copies of our passports in our carry-ons for years.

About once every year or two that we travel back to the island for the winter, we meet, or hear about someone from a cruise ship that, for whatever reason, missed the ship and was stuck on the island without a passport.

Medical emergency, victim of crime, witness of a crime, car trouble, or just spaced it---they are stuck on the island. And without a passport, they won’t be flying out to meet the ship at it’s next port. The Caribbean governments, and the airlines, view you as an illegal alien without a passport.

A copy of your passport won’t get you off the island, but it will make getting a replacement easier.

If all goes well, plan on a three day stay. If it’s a holiday or a weekend, you might be our guests for almost a week.

This is not only true for Barbados, but for all the non-American Caribbean islands.

It is prudent to always carry your passport with you (Canadians…they put you in jeporady by taking yours).

You may visit the islands a thousand times and never have a problem. But by fate or chance it could happen on your next visit.

Carry your passports with you at all times off of the ship.

It’s cheap insurance and piece-of-mind.

You know, barbados, I've always just carried a copy of my passport (as well as a copy of my trip insurance policy and a copy of my BC/BS card, DL, CC, room key, and cash when I go ashore. I've always been too sceptical about taking my actual Passport, but if I cruise to Barbados, Aruba, or Costa Rica again, I will! Thanks for the info, barbados!

BTW...DD lives in Eugene. She was born a girl, but is now a Duck.

Thanks barbados. We had always understood that there is no substitute for the genuine passport in many circumstances. Fortunately, we have never had to test this information.

98Charlie, I was pleased to see your original post stating that you took your passports ashore.

Few people realize the chance you’re taking by not having your passport with you.

Over the last 13 years we’ve seen quite a few people at the Grantley Adams airport in Barbados attempting to get a flight out without a passport only to be denied boarding. Yes, all of them missed the ship.

They have to make application at the American Consulate in Bridgetown for a replacement, which is only open Monday-Friday. The photocopy that some folks carry speeds up the process by a day, but one still has to secure lodging and meals at their own expense while they’re waiting.

Trip insurance may, or may not, reimburse you for your expenditures, depending on the circumstances causing you to miss the ship.

By keeping your passport with you and a copy in the ship’s safe, the purser can aide you in a replacement at the next stop or two should you loose it ashore.

In our early days of travelling and working in the Caribbean, we always left our passports in the hotel or the ship’s safe. Why take a chance losing it?

But, we found out very quickly just how important it is to have it with you at all times when going ashore.

Passports; driver license; ships’ pass and TWO credit cards, each carrying one will save the day, regardless of how much, or how little, trouble you encounter.
