Yes. In the Caribbean, American Dollars are accepted in pretty much any cruise port.

yes, $usd will be accepted. however, depending on where you are shopping, costa rican colons might be your change.

If you are just doing some casual shopping for souvenirs I'd use Dollars. Carry a variety of bills so you can hit it close because Colones are usually given for change as sjmbruce mentioned.

 

If you do come home with some money little kids love the paper bills. A 2'000 note makes them think they've won the lottery and the coins make nice ornaments if you drill a little hole in them for a hanging wire.
