Money on account? What order do they use it?

I've been told that NCL uses OBC you purchase before the promotional OBC they give you and you lose the promo stuff if you don't run through both sets of OBC before you leave. If I have $300 in promotional OBC and $200 in OBC I've purchased, I know they will use the purchased $200 first and then the promo OBC, but what about cash you lay down on your account? Does the OBC get used before the cash or after it? Do they take purchased OBC, then promo OBC and then the cash...or do they use the cash before the promo OBC?

Basically, I won't put money on my account if I'm not sure they are going to use the OBC before it. I don't want to lose out on the OBC for no good reason.

Thanks much in advance!

If search function is working, you will find differing answers. I think it must be luck of the draw, whoever is doing the actual input.

On my NCL Star cruise, I had purchased $1200 in OBC (refundable), I had $100 in NCL OBC (non-refundable). The last night of the cruise, I still had $200 of my Refundable OBC left and the $100 NCL non-refundable. We had done shore excursions, specialty dinner, and ship board purchases, but they were all taken from my Refundable OBC. As well as the DSC.

If I had not tried to get my $200 back, I wouldn't have even known I would lose the $100 NCL OBC. They would not give me any of the money at the Credit Desk, telling me a check would be mailed to my address of record. I went to the casino, cashed out my $200 paying a 3% ($6) fee, but the girl said I would lose the $100 NCL OBC. So I went to the watch shop and spent it on a watch.

The next morning the bill in the slot showed a 23 cent credit with the wording that a check would be mailed to my homw address, I've never received that check.

Right now there is another thread going that people are saying they got their check stapled to their bill, or they got the cash back. But that certainly is not what I was told. I was told "It is NCL policy to mail the check to the home address of record".

So just be prepared for anything to happen.

Order of use is Non-refundable OBC FIRST, Refundable OBC Second (But will be used from the beginning for DSC), any other form of payment Last.

Odd. I was told the OBCs were used in the opposite order, which was why I was concerned. Your way is how I would have assumed they did it, since it's good service to. Wonder why I'm getting conflicting answers though.

Ouch. That would explain it. The ships are all doing different things, it seems.

Does anyone know if OBC can be used for purchasing wine or alcoholic or soft drinks? I've never had OBC before. Didn't mean to hijack this thread.

Hijack away! I learn something every time someone asks a question. :p

Actually I was on the Star AFTER agabbymama. Perhaps they had not figured out how to properly use the OBC before she sailed or she misunderstood her statement. It is odd the way the non-refundable balance is shown as "Non-Ref Balance" below a line that says "Balance" and shows as a negative number if you still have Refundable OBC left.

We got a copy of our bill on the first sea day. We started out with $725 Non-Refundable Credit and $175 of Refundable Credit. Below are our balances as of Day 2....

Balance: -151.00 (Used $24.00 for 2 $12 DSC's.)

Non-Ref. Balance: 556.30 (Used $168.70 for bar bills and gift shop)

We were on the Star for 7 days last year and the Dawn for (2) 7 day cruises last year and on the Gem for a CTN all with OBC. The Gem, Dawn and the Star all use the OBC properly.

Thank you! I'll be on the Dawn, so it's good to know they usually do it the right way.
