webgal318 Posted March 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2013 We are cruising in May and have been to St. Maarten a few times. I would like to return to the Butterfly Farm and Marigot (for a little shopping) without having the constraints of a tour bus. Is taking a taxi feasible? I don't know the distance from the ship to either location. Thanks Sylvia and Mac
DiDi Kavanaugh Posted March 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2013 Totally a good plan and much nicer than a tour. We were able to hire a Taxi that insisted on taking us on a tour and then staying and waiting for us at a reasonable price. Just make sure you get back to ship in plenty of time. Kathy816 Posted March 12, 2013 #3 Share Posted March 12, 2013 Here's a link to taxi fares on St. Martin: http://www.taxistmaarten.com/en/taxi-zones-rates.html We added up where we needed to go and decided it was less expensive to rent a car for the day (we're staying overnight and were planning to visit several spots). webgal318 Posted May 27, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted May 27, 2013 I wouldn't spend the cash on a taxi to visit downtown Marigot again. The only souvenirs that we found were mostly all imported. I had hoped that I could find something of quality made by the locals. Getting a taxi to take us back to the ship proved to be a hassle since we chose to wait for another couple to join us in order to keep the price down. As far as our direct trip to the Butterfly Farm, a tour was already in progress and we were told to join them so we missed out on part of the guided tour. I will look at a good excursion next time. Sometimes these boards do give you good advice. I hope my post will be helpful to someone else who is considering a tour on their own. Karysa Posted May 28, 2013 #5 Share Posted May 28, 2013 On Saturday and Wednesdays the Marigot Market has local crafters. I recently bought local watercolor paintings and coconut fibre paintings. The fort is also worth a visit for the views and exercise. I would have told them at the Butterfly Farm that I would rather wait and join the next tour. Le Galion beach is only a four minute walk from there and is a great beach for children especially.
