ussminnow Posted July 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2013 Hello, Cruisers! Can anyone suggest something "different" to do in Copenhagen for those who had been there once before and saw the highlights and most popular tourist attractions at that time? We were planning on doing Copenhagen on our own this time since we had been there before, and were looking for interesting things to do that we had not done previously. Any ideas?? Thank you! Ljunggren Posted July 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2013 That depends on what you like to do, and how long your stay is!
MrsWaldo Posted July 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 29, 2013 yes very much depends on your interests and how long. We just spent 4 days on our second visit post cruise. We spent most of day 1 going out to Helsingor (doable if you only have a day though 40 minutes by train each way) Which is Hamlet's Castle. The free 11am guide in English was the highlight of our Copenhagen trip.
durante Posted July 29, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 29, 2013 How about catching the train across to Malmo in Sweden? Beautiful old town area.
Danish viking Posted July 29, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 29, 2013 Lund is Sweden is also a beautiful town. If its in the summer months then a trip to the coastal towns og Hundested, Tisvildeleje and Gilleleje could be a good trip, all these trains are reachable from Copenhagen by train with a change of train in Hillerød where Frederiksborg Castle is located. A one day trip to Freeriksborg and Kronborg Castles is also a great daytrip.

I like the idea of Hamlet's Castle! Do you have any info on how to arrange that? How much time in total would you say we would need to do that? Thanks! Danish viking Posted July 29, 2013 #7 Share Posted July 29, 2013 There are direct trains from Østerport (near the port) to Helsingør where the castle is located and that trip takes 40 minutes. There is 3 departures every hour.
MrsWaldo Posted July 29, 2013 #8 Share Posted July 29, 2013 We left on a the train just after 10, you need to to main end of the station to buy tickets. There are green machines which say billjeter (spelling?) You can choose english to operate them and use your CC to pay of you have a pin. You only need a 2nd class ticket, we didn't buy a return but it would have been more cost effective. The kronborg (which is the castle) website will give you travel information for train times etc http://www.kronborg.dk/english/ We spent about 2.5 hours at the castle. The guided tour took about 1.30. it starts in the courtyard need the casemates entrance. We had lunch about 1.30 in the town square area in Helsingor itself. Best Smorrebrod we've had in Denmark. Caught the train about 2.10 and were back in town by 3. If you are at Langelinie dock Osterport is an easy walk, trains also go from Central if the cruiseline has a free shuttle to town.
