It's been four years since we sailed from Southampton with P&O but have nothing but good things to say about my experience as a wheelchair user. At the terminal we were ushered into a separate queue away from the long line of passengers waiting to check in and we were on board and in having a coffee in just minutes.

Yes I had my wife with me to assist as required and it sounds as though you may be travelling alone in which case it may not be quite so easy but I'm sure there were porters etc on hand to help those that needed it.

When arranging my cruise just last month I contacted the cruise line RC's Special assistance team and they gave us all the help we needed at the pier.

Wheelchair assistance at Southampton is nothing short of brilliant.

All you have to do is ask one of the mobility assistance personnel for help who are usually hanging around the entrance and everything is taken care of for you. They are extremely helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them.

They take you to a special area but have to leave to get other passengers and when check-in opens come back and escort you to check-in and onto the ship. If you don't want to do the photocall tell them and they will take you through another way.

In June 2013, going on the Royal, local attendants wheeled you to a special area, where you waited, until registration started, then a ship staff member wheels you to the registration desk, and onto the ship, to your cabin, where of course you thank and tip the staff member ;)

I have just returned from a P+O cruise from Southampton. At the terminal special staff are at hand to wheel you through check-in, security and onto the ship (up to the buffet if cabins are not yet ready).

Returning home is just as easy, the helper took us right to our car :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Short answer - it depends on which terminal. Some are very good, others are outstanding.

For example - the Mayflower terminal always seems to be a sea of elbows but once you are in the disabled queue you will get sorted. The person pushing your wheelchair might get caught up in the general queue for the scanner, or may take you via the crew and suites door.

At the other end of the scale, the Ocean terminal is superb. Lots of porters, lots of chairs and a very effiicient system. My one experience at the City Terminal was also very good.

Disembarkation has invariably been good, much beter than the hassle at some other ports.
