Dogs on Ships

Great thread, have learned a lot!

I work with public transit, and see lots of obvious abuse of ADA laws of people bringing dogs on buses and trains. Sometimes it's not obvious.

Would people that legally need service dogs object to transit security asking people for proof? This would be to get rid of those committing fraud. I would think those that need service dogs would appreciate the weeding out of the bad apples, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

The ADA law specifically states that you or any other authority may not ask what the person's disability is......however, you may ask what does this do for you or what is the dogs specific task.

I would love if those in authority were given the right to ask more questions, thereby weeding out the culprits who buy their vests, etc. online.

Canine Companions for Independence and their CEO Cory Hudson are working with the Federal Gov. to hopefully, get all Service Dog paraphenalia, for purchase, off the internet.

Where did this horse sit during the flight?

The same place my 90lb Lab sits, on the floor. Horses have the ability to sleep while standing and have difficulty breathing when they lay proned so they probably use bulkhead or take whichever seat is available, with an adjoining seat.

My friend with a 100lb Service Dog does not fly because she finds it too difficult for her dog.

Choices, we have choices just like the general public.

A fellow coworker and I discuss this a lot, know the laws, etc.

I wish they'd change the law to allow weeding out the frauds.

Even if the law isn't changed, how would the law be applied if people starting asking for proof? Fraudulent users can't sue, they have no grounds. Those needing the law wouldn't sue, they'd be happy to weed out abusers.

It's not always about the "law suit" but more about the "convenience" factor. Anybody who tries to sneak in their pet doesn't want to leave it at home, or in the car. I don't blame them but they can't and should not do it.

If I see someone abusing the system with "FiFi" on their lap and them feeding it off the table, in a restaurant. You better believe that I will be the first one to call them "out!" If you know the law, you know that the Service Dog is not allowed on the table or allowed to eat off the dishes or silverware in any public venue; this includes but is not limited to cruises.

I remind them that they are breaking the law and could get the establishments license revoked and I will call the police [and, I have!] I've been witness to a woman who I insisted be escorted out the door with her Pomeranian in hand. The dog was growling, barking and eating in the restaurant and I had had enough!

A trained Service Dog will not bark, growl or act in any negative way in public. These moron's [and, I use the term loosely] better hope that they don't run into me!

"You" the general public should also not be afraid to "call them out" if you spot them in the market or in a restaurant and If their dog is acting inappropriately you have the right to question them and to ask the manager to have them removed!

I don't like to be mean to the animals [the four-legged one's], I love animals. But, when the humans attached to them drag them everywhere with them.......they better make sure that they're [the four-legged one's] are acting very good [especially, if I'm around!]

This is a great thread! I appreciate all the information provided by Roz! I am also glad that you mentioned it is okay to call someone out that is breaking the law. I have always taught my children to never approach a service dog because they are working. One day at the market, a lady had her dog in the cart and my kids hardly even looked at it. I asked my daughter to get something further down the aisle and it put her right next to the dog and the dog growled and snipped at her. I had the manager all over her in a flash! I knew if it were a real service dog she would not have been so aggressive.

This infuriates me. My Service Dog, Horton, is 90lbs of pure muscle. He's huge next to a small child. I was once in an elevator where a little girl was standing next to him and she was inching herself closer and closer to Horton. Can you imagine if Horton were not properly trained! He could have taken the face off that small child. He is so well trained that all he did was lower his head and stare at the floor. It was a remarkable sight and a true testament to the control that this dog exhibited.

Let's not talk about the mother who was with this little girl and allowed her to get so close to a strange dog [service Dog or not!]

The entire elevator, filled with people, remarked at how well behaved, controlled and gentle my giant was next to this little girl!

I've been on cruise ships where children have run up to Horton and thrown their arms around his neck before I or their parents could stop them. It's quite a site to see!!!! Worth every picture that is always taken of the scene. Horton's in more strange family albums, all over the world!

He does sound like quite the gentle well trained giant doggie.

I hope he provides many more years of assistance and happiness to your life.

I've sent you some pictures of Horton via email. If you would be so kind to post them for me.......I have no ability to post on CC. I'm picture challenged and get it wrong every time!

Thank you!

Thank you. I do so agree!!!!! He is a love and is such a "cuddle-bug!" He has absolutely no idea how big he is! He's an amazing working partner!

And, thank you so much for posting the pictures for me. :)

Horton is handsome but can he hear a who?

Horton Hears a Who and so much more!!!!!!

CCI, I believe, holds the record for dog naming! Some of the dogs names are so funny!

They usually, unless a dog is being named for someone very specific, name their litters according to the alphabet. Horton has a brother named Hamlet and sister named Hortense [just to name two of the 11 litter mates.]
