Yes, and we asked i-cruiser a lot of questions about the alternative path, and, as usual, his answers were very helpful. But I recently sent a mail about it to the tourist office because I would like to know if they had made a special city map for this, but the tourist office answer was just " stairs to mount Aksla are still open". I just supposed that, maybe, the works have been delayed. So I'll see by myself on the 28th of may and, if I'm able to do, I'll send a post on this forum.

I noticed The day before we left for our cruise that the steps are indeed open.

I will check this out when we arrive home tomorrow:-)

Hi Lars,

Can you give me some info on this? I have read of conflicting distances and of differing routes to Westeras from Geiranger. Is this a difficult walk or hike? Is there a path or do you follow the road? What is the real distance? And finally, is there any public transportation to the farm so we can save our legs for the hikes to the waterfall and viewpoints.

Obviously I am looking for alternatives to the ship excursion that includes a bus to the farm, "escorted" hikes AND waffles!

Hi I-Cruiser.

Would you know, is this: -

a photo op on the Mt. Dalsnibba coach excursion?

This is taken from "Flydalsjuvet". The tour to Mt. Dalsnibba might stop there for a photo op. Most of them do but you should check your tour description.

There is no public directly to the farm but you can take the bus and ask the bus driver if he can stop at Hotel Utsikten. Then you can walk the last few kilometers to the farm.

Departures from Geiranger is at: 09:10 or 09:40 and 15:00

Return at approx: 11:55.

Taking the bus up might be ok but taking the bus down might be a gamble as the bus has no scheduled stop where you want to join so might not stop.

If you want to walk from Geiranger to the farm you will have to follow the main road.

The distance is 4,2 kilometers and it will take you 1 hour to walk. All uphill so I hope you are used to hiking and are fit:)

I enclose a map:

https://www.google.no/maps/dir/Geiranger+Turistkontor,+Kaia,+6216+Geiranger/Wester%C3%A5s+Hytteutleige,+Vester%C3%A5s,+6216+Stranda/@62.0978422,7.2074853,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x46142646d2279c21:0x8b3d81ccdd8f5e17!2m2!1d7.205411!2d62.102231!1m5!1m1!1s0x4614266a7fb45f4b:0x5006f24129cfe37f!2m2!1d7.215335!2d62.101051!3e2

The easiest way to get there is by taxi. You can take the taxi up and walk down.

The tour buses or the hop on/off might let you go with them up but not sure if they will let you on going down. the only thing you can do is to ask them.

I have jet to read if someone else has done this successfully.

Thanks for that. I so badly want to stand on that rock and have a picture taken.

I really hope you are more clever than that. One miss step and you are looking at a several hundred meter freefall. I doubt it will be pretty. You will miss dinner for sure.

Good idea of you to bring up the photo op idea.

Along the Flydalsjuvet there are rails to stand and walk behind. They are there for a reason. Under no circumstance should anyone venture beyond those rails.

Under no circumstance should anyone walk or bend over the edges of cliffs, mountains or rivers to get "that" lovely picture.

Just because someone is a good hiker/in good physical condition does not mean they know the area. Everyone should be cautious. The nature can be deceiving.

Every year someone is being careless and loose their lives.

Lets hope that this year it will not be YOU.

Have fun and enjoy the nature from a distance.

All good advice. Even if I got the opportunity for that picture I'd bottle it and decline!

Thanks Lars. Any idea as to the one way cost and general availability of a taxi?

The cost of taxi would be approx NOK 500,- for the car.

Geiranger is a popular destination so taxis might be fully booked with sightseeing tours etc when you are there.

I would recommend you to pre-book a taxi.

Contact details for taxi company:

the Fjellstua if we were to trek up the 418 steps, where do we find the steps from Alesund, how seriously steep are they (I don't like coming down very steep steps or big drops to the sides) . Also I believe the cruise ships no longer go into the fjords? If so are there local trips into Geraingerfjord that we could do independently ?

Many thanks

It will depend on which ship and itinerary you are looking at but the ships do sail into the fjords. Very much so.

You can do Geiranger interdependently by renting a car. You should allow at least 8-10 hours for such a tour.

The steps to Mt. Aksla is situated at the foot of the city park. Its easy to find and only a 5 minute walk from the pier.

The steps are uneven, some of the steps are small and some are large. Some of the drops to the side are steep. There are handrails.

Hi thanks for replying, will see how the steps go, I can endure if the views etc are worth it .

we will be on Oriana on the July cruise that also visits Lofoten Islands X415 , it doesn't mention that it cruises into the fjords themselves but am hoping it will do .

What is the itinerary? If you told me I could tell you if you do the fjords or not.

Geiranger - Olden/Loen - Flåm is all in the fjords.

ahh Ok Olden, Andalense , Trondheim, Lofoten, Alesund, Flam and Bergen

Ok - lots of fjords.

Olden - is in the Nordfjord/Innviksfjord

Åndalsnes - Romsdalsfjord

Flåm - Sognefjord/Aurlandsfjord.

So in Åndalsnes I would do a tour to Path of the Trolls and the Trollwall

In Ålesund you could rent a car and go to Geiranger.....you could do a cricle driving to Hellesylt and take the ferry in the Geirangerfjord to Geiranger then back out to Ålesund via Storfjord.....

Our ship will be in Leknes on July 22 8AM- 1Pm.

Would it be possible to take a bus to Nusfjord any details are appreciated?

Not the area I know the most about but July 22 is Tuesday so you could catch a bus at 09:50 am arriving Nusfjord at 10:20 am.

but there are no return that fits so you might want to conciser a taxi either both or one way.
