sharmorr Posted March 26, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2014 Considering a NCL cruise from Rome - 2 days after disembarking from a Viking cruise in Basel. Need help with transportation. If we take train, better from Basel or Zurich? If Zurich, how do we get from Basel to Zurich? Different classes on trains? Any idea of cost or sites I can research? Your advice is appreciated. Go to the PORTS OF CALL board for EUROPE and go to Northern Europe, and ask there! Someone will be able to help you. I would say train, you might want to look at the Swiss Railway website SBB.ch/en . Just looking at the schedule there are a few trains each day, one having only one connection in Milan. You need to figure out how much luggage you have to manage when changing trains. Going first class will probably get you a seat away from the masses, but it will cost you. Second class coaches are also very nice so you can save money going that way. Having said that, if you can get a cheap flight on one of the cut rate airlines you might have a more pleasant trip. They do charge for luggage extra so figure your costs carefully. Check out Flybe, Air Berlin, Whitewings, Ryan Air, etc.
don't-use-real-name Posted March 27, 2014 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2014 Travel by air stay away from Ryan Air - they may have lowest price BUT then you must print your own tickets and boarding passes and list goes on and on with fees this and fees that and customer service is a lost art ! As for rail in Europe check and see if the Eurail Pass would work for you in this situation. Note must be purchased before leaving the USA. Railroading is still vibrant and functional in Europe - it is not like here in the USA where freight and politics are messing the system. Member of AAA use their travel agency service it's FREE. Other TA's will also offer free service but they need your business to stay in business.
