Wed. Papal viewing and visiting a catacomb

We will be in Rome this October before our Reflection TA. We arrive in Rome around 8 am on a Wednesday. Our accommodations are very close to the Vatican and Piazza Risorgimento. I have tickets for a Scavi tour at 1:30. Question is how does the papal audience work as far as timing and what happens? We will be within walking distance so we were wondering if we might be able to see this.

My husband wants to see a catacomb. I know the one Rick Steve's recommends is closed on Wednesdays but we would have trouble fitting it in anyways. Which catacomb would be best and how do we get there from Piazza Risorgimento?

Thanks for all suggestions.
