Casino winnings and state taxes

My family was on the Epic back in January and my parents had an incredibly lucky week at the casino, including a couple of payouts that required W2s.

My parents are pretty serious recreational gamblers and they always get win/loss statements from the casinos they frequent for tax considerations. Sometimes, however, they win enough that they owe income tax to states that they don't live in -- like New Jersey.

So if you win on a ship in international waters, you receive a W2 form. What about state income taxes? Is there a chance that my parents will owe the state of Florida (since that is where NCL's corporate office is located in the US) money at the end of the year if they didn't lose more than they won? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

You have to pay both federal and state taxes if you win on a ship and receive a W2. I didn't pay Florida taxes when I won on NCL. Of course, if your losses amount to more than you won, you don't have to pay any taxes on it. Edited by NLH Arizona
