Just wanted to share how much I enjoyed the review! We just booked the Epic for Feb 8 a couple days ago and this really helped get me excited. Plus convinced me to upgrade us to the UDP since I hadn't realized it included Cirque (which I had booked for the second night but now changed). We also have the UBP free so seeing all the lists of drinks was very helpful too. I am really looking forward to your next review as well - hope you get some of it done before we head out since the wonderful pics and descriptions are so exciting! Thanks so much for doing this!

MegaCruiser: we've been on the Epic & the Getaway in the past 12 months... In my personal opinion, the Epic is better, simply due to the layout...would like to see your pic's/thoughts from walking out of the buffet towards the main pool. Very small main pool area...no chairs/tables (except for smokers.)

We're on the Epic in 2016 out of Barcelona....may do BTB in 2015.

On both those venues, what are you "you can't miss this" excursions? (NCL or not.) Thanx! joe

I disembarked Getaway on Saturday and am now on Quantum of the Seas.

I'll be writing a full review of my experience, with detailed comparisons to Epic. Each has certain things in its favour, so choosing between the two is not easy; a lot depends on the aspects most important to you or those with whom you will be sailing. I agree that if using an open deck with nearby pool is a high priority, then the Epic wins, hands down. Not just because the main pool deck is bigger and less enclosed, but because there is a second pool in Spice H2O. Entertainment was also superior.

On the other hand the Getaway's Vibe Beach Club is wonderful and the Waterfront is an amazing innovation and a possible game changer for many. So in summary I wouldn't rule out either ship in future. For all the details that should be considered, please watch out for my review when I get back to the UK.

Meantime I am sure others who have sailed on both will be happy to give their observations and opinions.

As far as excursions go, I can't really offer advice as I seldom take them.

Regards

Hi mega cruiser, I'm following! In fact after months of lurking here on cc I've joined to be able to thank those of you who write such fantastic reviews that help me plan my cruise.

I've booked epic for October 2016 having only previously sailed with royal caribbean. Both your review and sdmikes have been really helpful so thank you very much.

Mega-Cruiser,

Once again, I want to echo the sentiment of many of the posters before me, when I say thank you so very much for the amazing review of this cruise.

I truly appreciated all of your efforts to share your experiences. And I know I will certainly be referencing this thread in the coming months, while counting down the days until my own departure.

Could you please let me know if you happen to recall which terminal this departed from Barcelona ? We are looking to arrange a hotel close to port and I was under the impression that there are several options depending on the Cruise terminal.

How did you come to chose the company in Barcelona you had used for your transport ? Any additional insight would be most sincerely appreciated and welcome. My email is Nikki.Dugan@aol.com if you'd prefer to message privately.

Again, my sincerest gratitude for your gracious reviews

Hello Nikki,

Many thanks for your kind comments.

Epic docked at Terminal A, the first berth of the main pier approaching by vehicle, where all the large cruise ships dock in one line. I don't think it would make much difference to your hotel choice no matter which terminal you will be at. Maps of the port can be found online. I would post a link but not sure if that is allowed.

Kind regards

Hi

first can i say this is a fantastic review and i have found it extremely helpful

please can i ask just one question

you mention the elevators only going down to deck 6 ? does this mean we must walk through the casino to get to taste ? or can we walk further down to deck 5 using the stairs (either fwd or aft) our cabin location is close to those aft elevators

You take the forward elevator to 6 then walk toward the casino (going aft) and take the escalators (also stairs) down just before the casino. If you take the aft elevators to 6 (which is where Manhattan is), then you do have to walk through the casino.

Hello Rhea98,

Thanks for answering Jofishes question. I am so glad you did because it has just reminded me why I seemed to be forced through the Casino all-too-often on the Epic; did not have that issue on the Getaway and I really liked that.

Kind regards

Megacruiser - Thank you so much for an entertaining and informative trip review. It was the best ever. We are going on the Getaway in November and your review has made me ever more excited. Again, thanks.

Thanks for commenting. I hope both reviews proved useful...

Kind regards
