Dressing for Dinner

Three years ago when we toured Alaska with NCL most days we would get onboard and end up going to dinner in the same clothes we toured in during the day. This time around we are doing Celebrity cruises. Do we need to bring "dinner" clothes along besides the formal clothes? Thanks for the advice.

Most days no. They do have formal on Celebrity , where except people to dress up. On those nights you could go to a extra cost restaurant or the buffet.

We've done three Alaska cruises on Celebrity ships, and while the dress on each of those cruises was more casual than on any other Celebrity itinerary we've done we still found that few passengers arrived at dinner in the MDR wearing the hiking boots, muddy jeans and hoodies they had worn during the day. On non-formal nights folks were wearing slacks or cords, with some wearing nicer jeans. While some women did wear skirts, most were in slacks or pants.

But I have found great differences in Celebrity cruises. In 2012 we did B2B Panama Canal cruises (San Diego to Ft. Lauderdale to Seattle) and on that second leg of the B2B (neither of which was during "spring break season") the passengers were a little older and definitely dressed much more elaborately with a great number of tuxes and gowns on formal nights.

While you can go to the buffet in casual clothes on formal nights, proper attire is expected in the optional restaurants on Celebrity.

Generally, Celebrity cruisers will wear the same clothes to dinner as they would wear out to a nicer restaurant. You'll see khaki pants or slacks with polos or button shirts for the men; slacks, capris, or skirts with nice tops for the women. This is an uptick from the daytime wear of T shirts and jeans in Alaska. If you're dining out at a restaurant almost anywhere in Alaska, jeans are OK - just that the cruise lines have their own guidelines.

There are many threads re formal night on the Celebrity forum. Read them only when you are sporting a good sense of humor as some of the posters can be rather strident.
