International Driving Permit Needed to a Rent Car

When you rent a car in Cayman Island you need an International Driving Permit. You can pay the fee at the car rental desk or purchase a permit before you go and show the rental car company the permit. I just did a blog on this. You can read it here

This would benefit you if you are going to different locations where an International Driving Permit is required during a one year period. There are other islands where an International Permit is required.

I did rent a car in Grand Cayman and nobody asked me for International permit. Just my driving license.

If you don't have a local license or an international permit, the car rental places automatically issue you a temporary permit for about $10 (was $7 the last time we had to do that, but that was quite a few years ago).

Yes unless you plan to visit multiple destinations in during the year that require an IDP don't even worry about that. You'll be issued one at the time of rental as bookababe said. I believe we paid $10 when we spend a couple weeks there almost 2 yrs ago.

 

One item that requires consideration beforehand however is whether you are covered by your primary auto insurance policy or another that you have. For example with our policy we're covered everywhere except a few specific locations. Our cc company has additional benefits, but if planning on renting anywhere other than the US or a US territory do contact your ins company to understand exactly what coverage you do or do not have.

The price went up for a visitor's driving permit. It's now CI$16 = US$20. It can be issued at the car rental agency upon producing your driver's license from home.
