Pearl Alaska Photo Review 9/21-9/28/14

After our walk back, we went to check in. We were Silver under the Latitudes program (after the cruise we are now gold), there was a much shorter latitudes line, which was great, there was an even shorter one for gold and platinum-next time.

We went to the room to drop my purse and DH's carry on and check out the room. Last year we were on the Jewel and had a suite. Suite life was perfect, when i booked the cruise I booked the suite. However, we bought a house, and it was the proverbial money pit, so after redoing almost all of the electricity, I thought we should downgrade.

We had a mini-suite 11508 forward close by the elevators. I liked the room, especially the curtain and the full couch. The only thing I did not care for was the small tv. We did not watch it much but had on as background noise, but the screen would go black at night and you could only use the remote to change the channel down, not up. Not a bid deal.

Anxiously waiting for the rest of your trip report! We are sailing the Pearl in May, 2015 and will be in 11572 . I've read some reports of noise from the above deck. Did you hear noise from Deck 12?

Thanks the Pearl is a great ship. I never heard anything until the early morning and it sounded like some dragging of chairs, but never enough to wake me up. We had lots of fog so the captain blew the horn a lot, but other than that no noise.

The Pearl was a great ship and near perfect, but there were a few missteps. Moderno was one.

The amazing salad bar:

We enjoyed the amazing salad bar, then our waitress brought our plates for the meats.

There was a group of 8-10 officers and that is where the gauchos served. There were two to three at the officers table and none in the rest of the restaurant.

Our waitress brought the sides, which we ate, then brought us more fried bananas and still no meat.

After about 15 minutes one gaucho circulated around the rest of the restaurant. During this time the others were all at the officers table. Once the officers finished then we were served.

Obviously we did not starve, but it was aggravating to not be served while only the officers were. Our waitress was great and kept coming around to see if she could do anything, we wanted to say something to a manager, but never saw one. However, it was another great meal and Moderno is a unique experience to have on a cruise ship.

We arrived in Juneau at 2. We did the whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier tour.

We stopped at Tracy's crab shack, it was good, but would have been more enjoyable had we not been short on time.

Yes we are both adults and there are no children, but we still love our towel animals, the first night when there was not one, DH was disappointed.

I wondered how I took now pictures until 2. Here is breakfast with whales, the art auction and lunch on the open deck.

Awesome photo review. I was on this cruise too...one of the best cruises, ever! We surely enjoyed the great weather.

Love your coat. I don't think I have emphasized enough how great the weather was. Having never been to Alaska I went by guidebooks and websites and thye had high/lows for each city as 55/45 with a ton of rain. We had nothing but sunshine and no rain, in addition to two days of sunshine in Seattle. The only time we were cold was after sunset at Mendenhall glacier and sitting on the balcony during glacier bay, but that was definitely worth it.

Loving the review. Alaska has become our favorite spot and I love to see what everyone else does on theirs. Keep it coming

Thanks. I think it is amazing how people can have such different experiences and be in the same port. Alaska is one of those places you have to go to a few times to see. Next time I would like to see some bears and go to the sanctuary in Ketchikan where they have reindeer. My husband was not able to take a long train ride in Skagway, but would like to take the train into Skagway next time if he is able.

My husband has a medical problem which make it uncomfortable for him to sit for long periods of time, we thought it was controlled by the medication, but did not know since he does not have a desk job and rarely sits for long. After the flight it was bothering him, but when we booked our excursions I told him i did not want to risk it and book the Yukon train ride when he would miserable, instead we booked the Ghosts and Goodtime Girls Walking Tour.

They offered the walking tour at 9 and at 3:30, since Juneau was going to be a long day I booked for 3:30 which allowed for some leisure time in Skagway and on the ship.

The train depot is close by the ship:

Our plan was to stop by Java cafe for a drink, relax and drop off our order form for the drinks for glacier bay and then walk around Skagway and have lunch in town to eat locally. We could then go back to the ship and change if needed and meet up with our tour at 3:15.

I found the Medusa Sculpture in the Atrium fascinating and noticed it was a Dale Chiluly work. I think these pieces make the Pearl and NCL stand out, but I don't know what importance anyone else attributes to them for the overall experience, but i liked it.

We dropped our drink form off and talked to the bartender, who also worked in the casino bar, they told us for glacier bay to see both sides be on the top deck by 9 and then we were having drinks on our balcony at 10 and the ship would turn around so both port and starboard side could view the glaciers.
