DAY 5 - ST. MAARTEN

Dinner Dress Suggestion: Casual

Dinner Theme: Basil

Drink of the Day: Caribbean Tea

The weather today was beautiful. I decided to break away from the rest of my group and do an excursion by myself. I chose to do the ATV Tour. This tour was 4 hours from pick up to drop off at the pier and cost $119. At 8:30am I met the group on the pier. We then boarded a bus which took us about 5 minutes to the company with the ATVs. There we had to fill out waivers and get fitted for helmets. Everyone wears a hairnet under the helmet for their own protection. Once we had our helmets on we went outside and picked an ATV. They gave a really brief explanation of how to start, accelerate & brake the machines. It was now time to go. We drove along the side of streets through the Dutch side of the island and over to the French side. Along the way we made 2 stops at lookout points and 1 at Orient Beach. We stayed at Orient beach for 1 hour before getting back on the ATVs and heading back. I really liked this excursion and thought although a high price it was worth it.

We then got to Orient Beach. We were given 1 hour to get food, drinks and go to the beach. The tour guide did ask that if people are going to drink, only have 1 so that you are still able to drive back.

To use the restroom was 75 cents but if you tell them you're on the tour its free.

There are a lot of bars along the beach with lounge chairs in front of them. further down the beach is where the majority of people were where there is more beach and no bars. I grabbed a chair, put my stuff down and went in the water. Loungers are $5 or $7 depending where you are on the beach.

Leandra's. I went here for a drink and food. While waiting for my food I was talking to the owner and he said during Hurricane Gonzalo a month earlier they lost their whole patio. They had to quickly rebuild which took about a week. He said some other bars lost a lot more and there was also a lot of looting.

Any idea where this was? Looks like it'd be an awesome place to spend the day snorkelling away from the crowds!!!

From looking at a map of St. Maarten this is Baie de L'Embouchure on the french side of the island.
