DRS/NC Posted November 7, 2014 #1 Share Posted November 7, 2014 Has anyone visited the Ahalanui warm springs near Hilo? If so. are you aware of any tours there? I've been to Hilo several times & am looking for something different for my one day there.
Susan-M Posted November 8, 2014 #2 Share Posted November 8, 2014 It might be an issue getting there due to the current situation with the lava flow. This map shows the proximity of the flow to Hwy #130.
kapoho2 Posted November 8, 2014 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2014 The warm pond did sustain some major damage during Tropical Storm Iselle. I believe the pond has recently reopened to the public within the last couple of weeks. Right now, there would be no problem getting to the warm pond. Of course, this could change at any moment. I see tour buses at the pond frequently, but I am not sure if the tours allows time for a dip in the pond, or if it is only a photo stop. Any tour that mentions the "Red Road" in Puna would probably stop at the pond. You could easily rent a car and tour this area of Puna on your own. A drive down the Red Road with a stop at the pond is a tour we do with all of our visitors. When Highway 130 is closed due to lava (the flow has stalled for the moment) then this would be much more difficult.
