Hello all you informed persons. We will be in Juneau next May and there are 4adults in our party, one can not walk too far so will have a walker. We want to see Mendenhall Glacier and some of the area. Looking at the shore excursions offered by Princess we are leaning toward renting a car and getting around by ourselves. Does this sound doable for us? Thanks for any info you can give us.

Most of the sites are near the cruise port . For Mendenhall I would just take the local shuttle from the pier ($10/person/each way). They drop your close to the visitors center , parking is a way away.

The rental car with the easiest accessibility is AVIS at the Goldbelt. With the mobility limitations you could send the driver to pick up the car and drive it back to pick up the others. It is simple to drive around Juneau, I suggest you find out what is available and know where you want to go. http://www.traveljuneau.com

Hi there,

We were in Juneau in June on a great 14 day trip with HAL. As mentioned already Avis has an outlet in the local hotel - they even have an overspill parking area close to the ship if you want to pop back for anything.

We drove along the shore to the very end of the Glacier Highway stopping at a number of view points and parks including St Theresa's Shrine. Went to the glacier en route back to the ship - easy to park.

After dinner we drove across the bridge and explored the old Treadwell Gold Mine - now a country park - practically opposite the ship.

Well worth a car - no problem dopping off after the Avis desk closed.

Enjoy!
