Walkie talkies on triumph

Recommended Posts

We wasted money and bought an expensive set that turned out to be a complete waste. First they are annoying to anyone around you if you are in a quiet place (like the serenity)and they are difficult to hear and use when in a crowded or noisy place like around the pool, buffet or casino). We were able to find each other and the kids more effectively searching the places we knew they were to be and leaving notes in the cabin for each other. I also got extra schedules and had everyone highlight the things they wanted to do so I would know where to look for them. There were also places on the ship that the talkies just didn't get any reception.

Save your money and make sure they each have a watch that isn't atomic so that they can stay on ship's time

When the hubby and I sail we just text each other. While we are at the port we have our phones cut off to everything except texts. I'm able to have my parents reach me about the kid or dog and can reach each other if we aren't together. Last cruise it was an additional $13 on our phone bill from the texting. $13 was worth it to us. Call your phone company and figure out what it would be for you.

PS don't tell your friends or boss you can still get messages... I don't care what's going on in the neighborhood or office. I'm on vacation!

Tried them for one afternoon. There was too much noise from them and they are an annoyence to others. I havent heard a walkie talkie on a ship since we used ours about 6 years and 5 cruises ago.

I won't go into my usual spiel about radios, you can search my posts for them, I answer this all the time. Remember that "range" that is advertised is for unobstructed line of sight. You won't have that onboard. Secondly, the obstructions you will have will be steel (decks, walls, ceiling), which is death to radio waves. Generally, the frequencies that consumer radios use are not the best for penetrating steel. The crew use $500 UHF radios that utilize repeater antenna placed around the ship. Okay, I lied, that's the short version of the usual spiel.

Basically, you will get some folks who say they've used them with no problem, and others that will tell you they could never get through. It all depends on many factors, and performance can vary from day to day or hour to hour on the same cruise. My recommendation, don't waste your money.

They work but as others have said are limited. We bring and give 1 to our daughter and we keep 1. If they come to our door and were on the balcony they call us on the radio. We can never hear the door knock, and we spend a lot of time on our balcony. We us on shore sometimes also.
