This is from their website:

Train Travel

  • All of our Alaska Cruisetour packages include travel onboard the Wilderness Express, our glass-domed railcar. Take in 360-degree views of Alaska's stunning scenery in the upper dome level or dine in style in the lower-level dining room, featuring locally-sourced Alaskan dishes.

  • Canadian Rockies Cruisetours include overnight train travel onboard the Via Rail's Canadian Sleeper Plus Class. Upgrades for travel on VIA Rail are available for an additional fee.

So I think it just depends on which cruisetour you're looking at. I did a cruisetour on Princess last year, and it was great, but really the itineraries and land excursions are very similar. If you have an opportunity to save some money by going with RCCL, you should just go for it.

In Alaska there is basically only one railroad. The Alaska Railroad (AKRR) http://www.alaskarailroad.com/.

The White Pass RR in Skagway is primarily a tourist train and has no connection to the AKRR.

The AKRR uses its locomotives to pull cars that belong to Princess, HAL, Celebrity and RCL, as well as it's own AKRR cars.

The AKRR is basically land-locked. It has no connection with any other railroad in Canada or the US.

A very popular rail trip that combines with a cruise to Alaska is the VIA Rail Trans Canada trip which travels across lower Canada and ends in Vancouver where passengers can board their ship of choice to Alaska.

We have taken the Alaska RR from Denali to Anchorage. They put special Princess cars on the train.

The problem with the Trans Canada trip is riding across Manitoba and Saskatchewan is like Kansas. It is not until you get to Calgary does it get interesting.

We are taking a land tour this summer on VIA rail. The Rocky Mountaineer is frightfully expensive.
