... how assignments are made. They claim that mariner status, amount paid, and when you booked come into play with assignments.
Yes, that's what dutchbyassociation, a former HAL employee, has said. Maybe this bad assignment had something to do with the relationship between this particular TA and HAL.

Maybe but it mirrors my experience with guarantees and that of others that booked guarantees on a given cruise. Of course hal would like you to believe that booking early, paying more, and having a higher mariner status plays into it because that puts more in their coffers. It doesn't represent reality in my experience.

You may be right, JTL. Who really knows? Anyway, I'm finished with that agency.

It's happened to you too? You think that it might be because we're solos? The guy that booked late and got the better assignment is with his girlfriend.

South of the border here we got the news about your provincial election. In Seattle (I'm in the county just north of there) they actually elected a Socialist Party city councilperson :(. I'm sorry that happened to you and hope that doesn't impact the economy in a way that will diminish your chances for finding gainful re-employment. Have a great cruise!

Actually it may have happened but I didn't know about it. My most glaring example of upgrades was on my Bermuda cruise in 2012. Some booked early, some booked late, some paid more, some paid less. Some were newbies, some were 4 star Mariners. Everyone that had guarantees were moved up the food chain equally. For instance if I booked an h I got moved up 2 categories so did everyone else. Yours was BS plain and simple.

That election was bizarre. I'm trying not to stress too much about it. Of course the oilpatch calls every change the end of the world. I'm going to try to take a wait and see attitude. I must be crazy because I took the 3rd and final upsell to a vista suite. It was still pricy but it was the last one. I love a balcony and this is my treat given the hell of the last few weeks. I'm not hurting yet from my layoff but I will if I don't stop. Thx for your kind wishes.

Thx for posting this info. There has been a couple of posters on here that claim they know how assignments are made. They claim that mariner status, amount paid, and when you booked come into play with assignments. I've noticed otherwise and here is another clear example of this.

I agree with Cruz Chic as we booked on the ship last time and paid the $200 or as they drop the deposit rate if you book during your cruise We booked a Caribbean cruise and had to cancel as they changed my son's college from quarters to semesters and our trip would have been when he was graduating. You would think HAL would give some preference to a passenger that booked during a cruise. We booked a guarantee and were put in what we booked..no upgrades at least so far.

One quick question here. If you book a guarantee, can you still get an upsell or is an upsell only for passengers that pick a particular cabin? It is early in the morning so if this has been covered in this thread and I missed reading it I apologize.

BTW I need to change my online name as well I "bit the bullet" and retired about a year ago. Loving it. Have the time now to work on my own and do my own thing on future cruises without the use of a travel agent.
