ntallwhowndrRlst Posted July 22, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 22, 2015 Hello! I am very interested in seeing the Batik shop at Romney Manor, but I'm hoping someone can give me more information on it. Do you get to see how they make the fabric? How did you get to Romney Manor? Could I just hire a taxi at the port? Thanks!
paul58 Posted July 22, 2015 #2 Share Posted July 22, 2015 Most tours stop at Romney Manor to visit the Caribelle Batik shop. You will see how the cotton fabric has its designs applied by hand with wax then dyed. It is repeated several times to create the finished product. You will see the design process only, not fabric production. I am sure the cotton fabric used is most likely produced elsewhere. There will be many operators at the port that will offer this tour. ntallwhowndrRlst Posted July 22, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted July 22, 2015 Thank you!! Do they sell the fabric as well? Are there many options?
paul58 Posted July 22, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 22, 2015 The shop has many items for sale that are batik, clothing, bags etc. I believe that they may have finished batik fabric but I am not sure about the size.

4boysnana Posted July 22, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 22, 2015 I am planning on visiting this location on my cruise in January. I can't wait! I better leave room in suitcase for fabric. I quilt and sew and yes I am a fabricaholic. 4boysnana

Bluemoon319 Posted July 24, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 24, 2015 I imagine it is rather expensive. Does anyone know?
4boysnana Posted July 25, 2015 #10 Share Posted July 25, 2015 In Arizona batik fabric is always a little more per yard than other quilting fabric. I am hoping they might have some small picture type fabrics. Like a sea scene with palm trees or something. I am working on a batik quilt right now that is called SEA GLASS. It is light blues and greens in batiks. I would love to find someone on my cruise that would like to hunt down some quilt shops on the Islands. 4boysnana
EatonDoolittle Posted July 25, 2015 #11 Share Posted July 25, 2015 I would love to find someone on my cruise that would like to hunt down some quilt shops on the Islands. 4boysnana Are you going to Curacao? There is a huge, wonderful fabric shop on the second or third street back from the waterfront, midway in the block, on the left, if you are walking towards the floating market. I am not a quilter, or crafty at all, but I was taken by the beautiful prints, and brought a few yards home. In Panama and Costa Rica you can get pieces of the mola fabric made by the Embera Indian women, which are quilted works of art in their own right. Again, not cheap, so so worth it for the hand crafted artistry. Good luck on your search. And yes, I was at the batik factory years ago and nothing was cheap, even then. I will check it out. Did they have batik? Thank you for letting me know. I would love to find some nice tropical fabric and I also do embroidery and needlework. See you in the checkout line Happy travels 4boysnana
Karpkg Posted July 28, 2015 #13 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Hello, I have pics I took in 2012 that will give an idea of what the fabric store looked like. This may help.

Cool Breeze Cruiser Posted July 29, 2015 #15 Share Posted July 29, 2015 I was pleasantly surprised that the prices were not as high as I thought they would be. They had a pretty good selection of small, inexpensive items too. A few pics from our visit in February. A Batik demonstration. The different steps.
