Smoking on NOS

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm new to the boards and haven't found this thread. Are all rooms considered smoking on the ship? What about common areas? I know the dining room is non smoking, what about Windjammer, Johnny Rockets, etc. People have mentioned some sides of ships are non smoking, is this true and is it enforced? Do people smoke in elevators/stairwells and confined spaces? Obviously I am a non smoker and am very concerned about spending a week breathing in cigarette smoke. This will be our first cruise and have only done all inclusives before. Unfortunately we have always been inundated by smokers on every trip we have taken and found that most of these smokers smoked anywhere, anytime. I sure hope the ship isn't as bad!

All cabins are smoking. You can smoke in any of them if you want, but I've never noticed too strong of a smell (if any). Most bars and lounges have a smoking side and a nonsmoking side. The main showroom is all nonsmoking. The indoor part of the WJ is all nonsmoking. I've never seen anyone smoke in the nonsmoking areas. I don't know about Johnny Rockets. Oh, and no smoking in the halls, elevators, shops, etc. The casino is pretty much all smoking, with a few nonsmoking machines, but it gets really smoky in there.

I've always wondered how the heck they get the smoke smell out of the cabins. We're taking our 10th cruise next month and we have yet to even find a hint of smoke in any cabin we have stayed in.

I think that, in general, you will find smokers very polite on board. Just be sure you stay in clearly marked no-smoking sections (which is most of the public areas) and you shouldn't have any trouble. There are really relatively few designated smoking areas.:p

The Starboard (right) side of the pool decks and promanade deck is the outside smoking area. Stay on the port side and you should be fine.

The Casino/Schooner bar area gets quite smokey. We were on the Mariner, and the Dragon's Lair nightclub was so bad we could not stay. I have never noticed it in the cabins, however.

Johnny Rockets is non-smoking in both the indoor and outdoor areas. If you check your daily Cruise Compass in your cabin, it will outline specifically the areas that are smoking. All other areas should be considered non-smoking or, in the case of some lounges, divided half and half.

I think the reason the cabins don't have a smoked in smell is, because smokers, like me don't smoke in the cabin. I may be a smoker, but I sure didn't want to smell up a small size space that I have to sleep in with smoke. Just one smoker's opinion! :)

DH and I are both smokers, but we don't smoke in the cabin either. We take the ashtray and smoke on the balcany. We try to get away from other people while smoking outdoors, realizing many people don't want to have the smoke around them.;)

That's probably true to an extent, but many pax do smoke in the cabins. There are portable ozone air generator cleaners onboard that can be used to clean a cabin in a fairly short time. These are the powerful machines that would not be safe to have on full-time (too much ozone), but can be put in the cabin between sailings.

 

All I know is that we've never had a problem with a smoke smell in the cabin--we're both non-smokers. And smokers almost always respect the non-smoking areas. Sometimes in the bars/lounges/casinos with smoking areas, the non-smoking areas are a joke. Smoke can't read and the ventilation often isn't good enough to pull the smoke out. However, we usually just go elsewhere or find the least smokey area. (The smokers aren't breaking the rules, so I'm not going to go bug them.)

 

We've really not found smoking on RCI ships to be a huge issue. Just make sure if you go into a smoking area that you don't complain about the smoke. We've actually heard people do this--wave their hands and cough loudly or tell pax to put out cigarettes even though they are in the smoking area.

We had the exact same concerns on Navigator and I can tell you that it wasn't an issue. There were only one or two smoking areas of concern. The first would be the casino. It was not awful but it was like walking into the smoking side of a restaurant.

 

Also, I was on deck and made sure to site on the side that does not allow it (I can't recall which but on one side you can smoke and on another, you cannot). A chair hog set up shop next to us and had 6 chairs for her family, who came about 2 hours later. They lit up and I asked them to put their cigarettes out. They said they'd prefer not to and maybe I could find a more isolated chair if "I" was "sensitive" to the smoke. Happily, I was able to point to a non-smoking sign next to me and said that they needed to go on the other side of the ship. They seemed really annoyed because I think they thought they'd got great chairs and all.

 

To be fair, while I have to admit that I enjoyed sending them packing, if I had discovered I was in the wrong and was on the smoking side, I would not have rolled my eyes. At least in a way that anyone could see! :)

Ozone machines aside...DW and I are both smokers too...but as a result...we always book a balcony room and NEVER smoke in our room...we don't want to live in a stinky smoke filled small area for a week either! And we always, always, try to be VERY considerate of others when and if we are ever smoking in a public area.

That's interesting. I had understoof that smokers were more likely to take balcony rooms for a reason that escapes me now.

On the SOS, if there had been smokers in our Deck 3 interior room, we didn't know it because there was no odor. But there was quite often a stench of smoke in the hallway, especially down by where the elevators are, which was likely coming from the rooms.

 

To get to and from the theater, my gf and I would usually walk through the casino or the bar there. The stench from the smoking was quite offensive. We didn't spend much time, or money, in the casino because of it.

 

Smokers should know that whenever they light up in a public place, they're probably going to be bothering someone, who is not bothering them. I would favor seeing the smoking areas extremely curtailed or eliminated entirely in the public spaces.

There is no smoking in the main show-room or the dining room and only on one side of the top deck. I don't think you could curtail smoking any more than it already is on the ships without essentially excluding the smokers altogether and then the prices would go up. I think the balance they've struck so far is fine, although it might be nice to see certain cabins dedicated as smoking ones and some being non-smoking, with others for those who don't care to state a preference.

If all non-smokers had your attitude and all smokers had my attitude, we wouldn't have a problem. Even before the smoking issue became political correct or mandated, I always tried to be considerate of those around me.

 

On the ship, I always go to an area with few or no people on the smoking side or as far aft as I can get to smoke so the smoke drifts away from others. Sometimes non-smokers have to come to that side and I don't want to make someone sick. Away from the ship, I go down wind and away from others. This isn't always good enough for some. A year and a half ago in the Caribbean, on a tour, I went down wind about 200 feet from the nearest person. My wife was standing next to a lady who pointed me out and said to my wife, "Look at that dang (she didn't say dang) idiot polluting my air." My wife told me about it and I would normally not do this, but that was just one time too many pushing my buttoms. The next stop on the tour, I saw the lady standing by herself, so I walk over to her and lit up. Not very nice, I know, but I figured she just liked to complain, so I would give her a good reason.

 

Another time I went in to eat when the place was empty and had a seperate room for smoking. I went to a far back table, ate, and lit up while reading a paper. A lady with a meek husband came into the smoking room and came all the way back to the table next to me. She immediately told me to put out my cigarette. I told her the other room was non-smoking. She said she didn't care and wanted to sit there and I could put out my cigarette. I turned back to my paper and continued smoking. She called the manager and started on him. Nothing could reason with her. Again, too many buttons pushed. I stayed longer and chained smoked so many, it almost made me sick.

 

Anyway, even if I'm in a legal area and it is causing you a problem, just be nice and ask, and I will try to accomodate you. Both sides just need to show some respect for the others.

Just off RCCL/NOS (Western) on Saturday. Didn't have any problems with lots of smoke/smokers. Our room was very fresh & had no smell from any previous smoke. For those wanting to stay away from smoke, you might want to avoid the casino, Schooner's bar and possibly The Dungeon (we didn't have a real problem there but ashtrays were on every table-there were some folks smoking in the back corners of the room). There were several times that my DH were walking down the hall & passed 2 certain cabins...everytime we would get a strong smoke odor. Also, a couple of nights found cigarette butts/ashes out on our balcony-must have been blown

from another balcony.
