Internet package help

I am taking our daughter on her first cruise in March. She has to keep in touch with her daughter daily, she has an I phone, and I am wondering if she takes the internet package will she be able to keep in touch through email???? I am still working with a type of flip phone so you can see that I can't possibly help her. I would love suggestions from all of you. Thanks in advance.
