Were you able to get the coveted 50 cent coins that are required for public restrooms in many areas, or just paper money? Also, where did you get the change?

 

On a river cruise yes. You could change it for any nomination (we've done that at the reception desk). Viking River uses euro on board. Viking Ocean uses US dollars on board so we never asked them to change any other currency.

Viking did not do currency exchange at all on our cruise in September. It was not this itinerary so I'm planning on handling that on my own before I take this cruise in April,

Although the cruise director announced at the port talks that the Explorer desk would have small Euro bills for tips, they never had any available when we asked

 

You realize that the smallest Euro bill is €5?
