Solo and taking vacation pictures

I agree. I travel a lot by myself, and have done both asking others to take my photos (I use a camera, not a smart phone for this) and used the self-timer built into the camera.

 

For the former, I usually look for someone who has a nice camera and often someone who is part of a couple of family, and offer first to take a photo of their group for them with their camera. Then it is an easy segway to asking that person to take my photo with my camera.

 

Using the self-timer, it is just an issue of finding a place to prop up the camera. I have a small Gorilla Pod that works well for attaching my camera to railings, etc. I do make sure to keep my camera close and within sight as I fear in crowded areas it might get stolen. With a digital camera it is easy to take several photos and delete the ones that don't come out or where you did not get yourself framed quite right.
