It rarely matters on most cruises. Personally we've got the starboard side on the Island Nov. 5 but that's just us. We always pick that side on any cruise.

We did the roundtrip cruise last year on HAL. We took a port side, and seemed to always be on the correct side of the ship. The captain, however, frequently does a 360 when sights warrant them.

We just got back (Wednesday) from the Regal Princess Hawaii cruise. As the ship sailed from Hilo to Kona, you could see the volcanic activity from the starboard (right) side. Other than that, the port (left) side was more often the "land" side. That could change.
