Today in history

Recommended Posts

For those aware of shipping history 104 years ago today the Titanic sailed from Southampton on its maiden voyage.

We have all heard of the ship, probably seen the movie in 1997 and its sinking resulted in many of the maritime laws we have today.

For me the discovery in 1985 and the books that were released about it set off a life long interest in ships which would lead to my cruising holidays.

Definitely a subject worth remembering that we have all heard about and talked about.

Thanks for posting Brisbane41 and reminding us that this lead to a change in maritime laws. I know about the change to the number of life boats I am not familiar with the rest though I shall have to google it.

The change in the laws after the sinking remind me of the Costa Concordia where they made it a requirement that muster was held before the sailaway.

Good information OP
