Okay, that explains it. Passengers are safe, but ship is going slower, and they arrive late and depart late on the next cruise. This all depends on what the exact issue is and if it can be fixed. Otherwise, it will affect the following cruise's schedule. Maybe a missed port, who knows?

Liberty has 2 Diesel electric power plants, and no "pods", just propellers. So you could be dealing with a Diesel engine, its associated generator, electric motor issue, or perhaps an electronic control issue.

Nothing to worry about safety-wise, and they will advise as to the situation.

Gee... where is chengKp75 when I need him?!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

CARNIVAL LIBERTY

MAY 2, 2016

May 1, 2016

Greetings folks!

We are looking forward to welcoming you on board tomorrow.

We would like to take this opportunity to provide you with some information on our arrival in Galveston tomorrow.

Due to a technical issue affecting our maximum cruising speed, our arrival will be delayed by approximately two hours. Rest assured all of the ship's safety systems and hotel services are operating normally.

We are hopeful to make up some time overnight. Therefore, due to limited seating at the terminal and parking facilities, we ask that you not proceed to the Port of Galveston before you receive our update no later than 9:00 AM CDT.

In the meantime, to stay in touch, if you haven't already done so during your Online Check-In, please sign up for text alerts by textingxxxxxxx to receive updates on our arrival into Galveston.

Thank you for your understanding. Most importantly, we can't wait to welcome you aboard!

Sincerely,

You pretty well nailed it, Lou. There could be a problem with one of the propulsion motors, in that they usually have dual windings so that each winding, powered from separate switchboards, provides half of the rated power of each motor. They may have a diesel down for repair, or they could have lost a circuit breaker or the SCR drive that allows the motors to run at variable speeds for one of the propulsion motors.

As you say, it will depend on what it is to determine when it can be repaired, and whether the itinerary needs to be revamped to meet the new "speed limit".

Deja View to our Liberty Cruise in 2012!!!! We had to miss a port and we were stuck in San Juan for two days while they fixed it. Weird thing? It was one of my favorite cruises and favorite ship. Hope they fix it!!

I'm on board now. Nothing to worry about just moving at a slower pace. All in all a great cruise. The weather last night was pretty rocky:eek: . We are still on board waiting to disembark, however they had plenty activities while we wait...and allowed us to remain in our rooms!!! Happy sailing everyone

Thanks, Chief. I guess this aviator is learning his stuff! Your details always help.

Hope you are doing well. :)

It appears Carnival likes to DUMP their old ships in Galveston, Celebration, Elation, Triumph, and now the Liberty. Each having some of the same issues. It's time to update and modernize because no one will want to get on a ship that has the potention to be another Triumph Disaster.

Liberty is not an old ship by any measure. Also, Galveston recently was home to Magic, and is now home to Breeze.

Ships are massively complicated machines that run pretty much nonstop. There will be mechanical problems from time to time.

Lastly, a propulsion issue is nothing like the Triumph incident. The possibility of another Triumph-type incident has been pretty much eliminated by the addition of more robust backup generators on all Carnival ships.

Could you elaborate on the "same issues" that all the ships you mention have had?

To get from a slow-down to a "Triumph Disaster" is a real reach. Especially after Carnival's redesign of the main power cables.

The generators look great strapped on each ship by the funnel. Band Aid to the rescue?

A little preventative maintenance would prevent this from happening. The costs would cut into CEO bonus though. Guess slow is better than a fire.

And you know that there isn't any preventative maintenance being done? Have you seen Carnival's International Safety Management System with its required imbedded maintenance program, which is audited by third party class surveyors, and seen that no one is requiring maintenance? Really? You've never had anything (like a car) where you followed all manufacturer's maintenance, and even done more, and the thing still broke? I love the armchair marine engineers here on CC.

The generators you are talking about were meant to be a temporary fix (yes, like a band-aid) to remediate a discovered problem in a timely fashion before a permanent fix could be made requiring extensive modifications to the ship's systems. These permanent fixes are being implemented as each ship goes to drydock. The problem the "CAT in a box" generators are correcting had nothing to do with poor maintenance, but the result of a poor design by the shipyard that built the ships.

And you have the proof? This is a bi monthly at least problem at CCL.

The yellow Cats more reliable than anything CCL has. I have noticed many have been painted to hide them.
